McMaz is the cable you are using a 2 pole mini to TRS mini? That's what I ordered from moon. And I'm only 80% sure that's the right config

I'm using a 2 pole to 4 pole that I made. Cost about $8. I already had the coax, heatshrink, solder, etc, so that cut costs down. It works great and the 3A sounds great with coax in.

Good to know. I just spent 70$ and I am not one to be proud of that. And I don't care that it says silver dragon or purple peacock or whatever the heck on the cable.
Kicking myself ha ha

I only made mine as an experiment when I bought the X3 as I wanted to hear the pairing and couldn't wait to order a cable. It worked so well I kept it.

I can see this thread is quite old. I'm just sharing my JH3A/JH16 setup fed by a Fiio X5 via coaxial output. It's relatively easy and cheap to get DIY interconnects here in Singapore. Other JH3A owners don't need to go custom for the coaxial interconnect because I recently found out the 3.5mm mono interconnect that came with the Fiio E17 will work just as well. There are other DAPs that offer coaxial outs but definitely not in the price range of the 1st gen X3 or X5. If you're going to use the DAP as a transport I see no point spending big bucks for it.

I think going coaxial is the better route. I compared the X5+JH3A coaxial vs. my iMod+JH3A analog setups and the digital route is definitely better for me. My preference leans towards the analytical side so I look for the details and clarity. Most people who prefer a warmer signature can opt to go via analog route with a DAP with a warm or dark signature.

I'm the second owner of the JH16 and I had it reshelled by a local guy to universals considering Jerry Harvey does not accept reshelling services. It's important to maintain the BA and sound tube arrangement as close as possible to the original. I didn't notice anything wrong with the sound after the reshell anyway. In fact I still find it sounds better than the newer Freqphase model - if only for the ability to adjust the bass.

Besides the adjustable bass I think having separate amplifier paths for low, mid and high helps in not muddying the mids if you set the bass too high. The JH16 via the JH3A definitely sounds better than directly to the X5 via the adapter - better to my ears at least.
