I realize this thread is pretty much one giant recomendations list to begin with, but would anyone care to recommend some tunes to a relative newbie of the jazz genre?

I know I love the classics (Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Dave Brubeck [R.I.P]), but beyond that, the most jazz I've listened to has been from the Cowboy Bebop soundtracks (good stuff if you haven't heard of it)

I love the classics as well, but I'm also a big supporter of current jazz artists - modern jazz is putting out some really innovative and engaging music. That being said, checkout the following - I tried to pick some albums that are more straight-ahead jazz:

Eric Reed - The Baddest Monk
Christian McBride & Inside Straight - Kind of Brown
Donald Harrison Jr - Indian Blues
The Ninety Miles Project (Cuban influenced jazz)
Gregory Porter - Be Good

Good starters here:

Miles Davis-Kind of Blue
John Coltrane-A Love Supreme
Canonball Adderly-Somethin' Else
Charles Mingus-Ah Um

Also, look for anything Miles did on the Prestige label...once you're done with that, and want something freakier:

Wayne Shorter-the All Seeing Eye
Ornette Coleman-Free Jazz A Collective Improvization
Sun Ra-the Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra
Sun Ra-Atlantis
Pharoah Sanders-Black Unity
Alice Coltrane-Journey in Satchidinanda
Herbie Hancock-Sextant
Herbie Hancock-Crossings

Have fun :)

Thanks for the recommends, I'll take a look at them when I get a bit more time.

For now, though, I came across this little gem
