On buses, planes and trains the engine noise tends to come through a little bit and noticeably lessens the bass quantity and impact. Is that normal? I bought closed cans to try and counteract this but it seems they still can't block out engine noise well?

They're only blocking noise by creating a seal between your ears and the cushions.  At best they are only going to dampen outside noise.  If you're looking for something more you should consider picking up cans with active noise canceling.

IEMs with a good seal will also block out noise better.
