I know I can get the AV40s for about $130, but what about this package?

Honestly no, the Sony headphones lack clarity if using them to edit or reference music. MXL mics are hit or miss, sometimes they will perform well sometimes not. Overall your better getting the AV40's then choosing a nicer mic such as the AT3030 and some reference phones. It might cost a little more but will be well worth it.

I can't seem to find anything on the AT3030. But how serious are you looking to get with your recording? I have the AT2020 usb mic, and since i am not too serious with what I record, I don't think it is that bad. How much are you looking to spend? The AT2020 is under $100 on Amazon.

The AT3035 is a step above the AT2020, then if you are brave enough then get the AT4040. All are good, the AT2020 has USB capability but that shouldn't even be used unless you are strictly using it for podcasting. I don't know why I thought it was a AT3030 when it was a AT3035

The AT4040 IMO kills the AT2020 and AT3035, here is an example of the AT4040 in use:

That's why I asked how serious he was about recording with the mic. Like I said, I have the AT2020, and if its not for real serious recording, it can be used. Hell, we have used it. And no, its not the greatest, but it doesn't sound all that bad.
