Do I have the strangest rig here on Head-Fi?
The sound is great. However it looks like some kind of a yard sale gone bad.
What odd gear are you using, and how does it sound?

My twisted rig.
Source is a NEC MultiSpin 6Xe (External) CD-Rom drive, into P3A DAC, to a Fisher 500C headphone out to Sennheiser 600’s.
Got the idea for the NEC from Positive-Feedback. NEC from E-pay <$10.00 with shipping.

Can you post a link to the article on Positive-Feedback? There's a guy I need to prove wrong about not being able to cobble together a CDP from a CD-ROM and misc. parts...

My audition rig:
Sony D-CJ01 / D-EJ725 (normal, even good looking)
etymotics ER4P (sort of normal...)
Porta Corda, powered by 3 9V batts wired together--wires fly all over the place--looks like a bad DIY job! (The parts responsible for this look ARE a bad DIY job

Wow, this thing has a DAC inside it! Thanks akar! I didn’t think to try the RCA outs until you asked. Figured it was digital out only.
It’s not bad, much better than any PCDP I’ve heard.
I'll listen to it without the P3A Sunday morning and get back to you.
This thing is a better deal than I thought.

I have an Apex AD600A DVD player. The transport is a DVD-ROM drive, complete with IDE interface. Makes repair sooo easy if the drive ever goes bad

How good is the Apex as an audio source Hirsch?

Hey, is there any other external CD-Rom that could be used instead of the NEC? I am having trouble locating one here. Thanks.

Onix, I would think there could be others as good or better. I only knew about the NEC from the posting on Positive Feedback. I would never expected this kind of sound quality from a external CDRom player.

Dear Lord!!! My first CD-ROM was one of those NEC triple spin. They look cool but are friggin huge by today's computer standards. I think my dad just threw it out this summer when they moved

. Man, I wish I knew about this earlier.
