Is there one headphone you think is extremely overrated?

As an SR-80 owner, I wish I had had the $$$ to buy the SR125s now that I have an amp.. But without an amp, the SR125s are not a good choice. That being said, the MS-1 would be a better choice than the SR80.

Overrated

PX-100. They're only acceptable, not good. Maybe I'm just used to the Grado sound. Spend a bit more and get something more substantial. I still use the PX-100 at work, but the sound always dissapoints me.

SA-5000s. Disturbingly bright IMO. Makes me feel like I'm listening to a brass band in a glass room.

I'm going to have to say the Westone UM2's. Everything I read about them was full of praise and love. I get them and so far I just don't like them, bass is ok, but the treble just isn't there. My opinion may change if they do "burn in" but as of today I'm seriously regretting this purchase.

Beyer DT990. Since they're an open headphone, I thought that they would sound like a more open version of the DT770 pro.

In comparison, they sounded muddy. Treble didn't sound as clean to me and I could only stand them for 30 minutes before I went back to my 770's.

I think the hd 650s is almost too euphorical and lush, DEFINITELY the opposite of un-involving. Impressive how tastes hearing(?) and opinions differ - and that's a good thing abot head-fi

I don't think it's overrated - it's just getting too many recommendations where something else might have been more suitable. Like the ATH-A900 and like DT531 was at a point.

Slightly overrated; sennheiser PX100 - hard hitting, offensive bass, HF are rolled off and details are missing that i thought was easy to reproduce. In some regards i think the MX550 was much more balanced, especially the bass.

Really, the Beyer DT-880 sounded about as good as my 7506, but with much worse soundstage. It seems that the 880 put the midrange in the front-center, the bass on the sides and the treble up in the air, which sucks IMHO. The treble was harsh and the bass was like loose mud all over the place. The amp and source used was a Linn Classic Music with a 0 ohms jack.

I listen to Rock/AOR and Metal by the way.

I much prefer my HD600, much smoother, realistic soundstage and much flatter/accurate.

.

I completley agree. The HD-650 to me is the opposite of un-involving with it's sweet midrange snd smooth sound. It may be overrated at certain prices, but if you can snag one under $300, they are definetly worth it. The Gilmore Lite is a great match with them.

As for an overrated phone, nothin really stands out for me, but if i had to pick one, it would be a Grado. Alot of praise went around for the SR-225's, but they were just ok to me..i guess im not really into the Grado sound, or the comfort.

I wouldn't say it's confusion in my case. I simply had no comfort issues, so there was never any hassle involved for me. Also, keep in mind, part of the charm of Grados to me is the idea of a small crew of workers assembling headphones in some dude's basement. When there's a product that suits my needs and it turns out it's made by a relatively tiny, family-owned business, I get warm fuzzies. Nothing against, say, the cold, german precision of Sennheiser. They certainly have their act together. But I like it when the little guys do alright.

The Senns and Audio Technicas I've tried didn't lend themselves to easy pad modding. I imagine there are plenty of models out there and people don't go nuts modding the pads on them. It would be hilarious to find a Beyer owner going through a lot of effort to use bowl pads however. Or to figure out the best way to install that vinyl headband from a Grado.

Also, my MS-1 came with the apparently awful sounding comfy pads. I have yet to try bowls or flat pads. The comfy pads were fairly comfy and certainly didn't sound bad. The Senn pads were better though and cost almost nothing.
