Is the D5000 worth the extra money over the D2000?

Just curious as this is what I am debating before I pull the trigger.

Stock for Stock. Im am talking D2000 being about 200 to 250 dollars cheaper than the D5000.

Also do the D2000 or D5000 need a really powerful amp? Or can I get by with a decent DAC/Amp combo?

Denons are relatively easy to drive (not as easy as ATH AD2000, but easier than Beyers). Decent DAC/amp should do the job.

The Denons are not overly difficult to drive, but definitely benefit from an amp due to the low sensitivity. Most devices can give them decent volume but may sound constricted until you feed them with a good current source. Any average DAC/Amp should do it

From what I've read... if you get the D2000s you have to buy a $200+ cable to upgrade them... whereas the D5000s are "good to go" without the upgraded cable.

Either way you're talking $400+ - might as well just get the D5000s and avoid the hassle with the cable.

And by the way... they are pretty "finicky" about the amp - they must have an amp with low impedence and high current output - like Grados require.

This is a tough decision... with the D2000, you end up with an inferior cable and lose the aesthetic look (and possibly sonic properties) of having wooden cups, unless you make your own. OTOH if you choose the D5000 and decide later on to recable it with a better cable and have no use for the stock spare, then all you've really gained for the difference in cost are the wooden cups. Denon advertises that their wooden cups give a warmer tone and improve the SQ, but if you're going to do the markl mod or add damping material to the cups, you can throw this trait or benefit out the window.

You should wait until someone comes forth and shows definitive proof (e.g. clear pictures of the stamped serial number) that the D5000 drivers are different from the D2000 drivers. If the age-old assumption holds true that they are the same, then the only differences are the cup material and cable, and it's up to you to determine if those justify the $200+ difference in cost.

I actually have experience with both as when I was in Japan I picked up the 2000 while my friend went with the 5000.

While the price discrepancy is hard to justify, the 5000s are superior in every way. The soundstage is absolutely incredible on the 5000s and they fix the one major problem of the 2000 - lack of bass.

If you can afford it, go with the 5000.

Well I am leaning towards the D5000 right now but I think I may wait to hear to man who has the D2000 and is getting Waddragons D5000.

I do not plan to recable so thats not a problem on the D5000, and I do not plan to Markl mod any time in the near future.

Thanks all for the input

lack of bass??? whoah what huh?

to the op, my d2000s are on their way because I don't have double the money for d5000s. There's not a chance you can afford x, y, and z if you pay for the big one.
example: pl750s (~$220) and d2000s (~$220) or something along those lines for less than d5000s (~$450).

This is a confusing time to ask. Previously the thought had been that the difference between the D2000 and the D5000 was the cable, but now some say there are other differences. I have read many posts that a recabled D2000 is as good as a stock/recabled D5000. I personally don't know what to believe, I would like to wait and hear more from people about this. I do have a pair of D2000's which I enjoy very much. Used them with a Zero amp/dac which wasn't bad, recently using them with a x canv8 which is damn nice, clear, authoritative, smooth, very nice soundstage. I might do a recable, if I can gather up enough courage to do the job myself.
