Is the D5000 worth the extra money over the D2000?

I didn't vote either. Although I've heard both, I haven't heard a stock D2000, only recabled, which sounds great out of my WA6.

But the amp, I believe, is quite important. I listened to the D5000 direct from the headphone out of an Apogee Mini DAC, and also from the DAC into a Yamamoto. The difference was night and day to my ears.

At its current price point, the D2000 is indeed a better deal for $220. I currently own a pair and like them alot. I would like to try D5000 since it has so many glowing reviews here, but I haven't found them in stock at ANTOnline or anywhere for $420 that folks were getting them at. They are close to $500 or more everywhere I look, and I just can't see spending almost $300 more for the minimal differences (cable, wood, some material). Sure, the frequency charts from Headroom don't lie, but two pairs of D2000 still cost less than a single pair of D5000. Maybe the drivers aren't the same... we will have to wait and see.

Why must you get them at $420 if you are not going to keep them?

example: pl750s (~$220) and d2000s (~$220) or something along those lines for less than d5000s (~$450).

Yup, this is what I did!

I couldn't decide between the D2000 and both Ultrasones, 750 & 2500... so I bought all 3 of them for about $670. My intentions are to sell at least one within a month, but who knows... I might like them each enough in their own right that I'll keep all of them.

Then when I've saved up some more money, I'm going to buy an MS-1, DT880, & AD900... and sell my AD700 along with one or two other cans.

Hearing them for yourself is the only way to know what's got a good sound and value. My only real option is to buy 'em, try 'em, and then keep 'em or sell 'em. This is the Head-Fi way!

While the price discrepancy is hard to justify, the 5000s are superior in every way. The soundstage is absolutely incredible on the 5000s and they fix the one major problem of the 2000 - lack of bass.

If you can afford it, go with the 5000.

The bass on my D2000's is slamming. I couldn't imagine wanting more bass.

I'd like to try them, like I said... (preferably with my setup, and keep the cans I like best). Plenty of folks around here have really taken a liking to both the D2000 and the D5000. D5000's were very scarce last year (when I obtained my D2000 at launch), and were pretty much available for only $700. Since the US release, its a steal to pass these up at just over $400 i.e. 40% off of the list price.

I bought the D2000s and my 880s (both new) for less than the price of the D5000s. Or you could buy the D2000s and the K701s. If money is an issue it seems like an easy choice.

I've been very happy with my D2000s, and yet I've ordered the D5000. I'm not expecting a *huge* difference, but what can I say, I'm hooked. And I love the look.

So ask me again in a few weeks (they're arriving via a very circuitous delivery path, don't ask) and I'll be able to tell you whether the upgrade is worth it.

This is really bothering me because if I get the D5000 it will just be the D5000. If i get the D2000 I will also probably get my livewires or Ultrasone 750s.

Hmmm...

Well I already ordered the D5000 so Ill see how I like those. If I dont like them I can always sell and get other phones.

But the D5000 are the only high end phones Ive been able to find at a local audio store and the 5 mins I listened to them I loved em
