Something like that. The Archos are Hard-Drive based PMPs with a primary focus on giving you ample real estate upon which to view video. The average user would typically chuck it into a travel pack to pull on on the airport or airplane, but its still perfectly capable of being packed in your pocket. It just won't disappear into it like the Touch will.

Someone else may be able to give you a comparison to the Zune (I can in a couple of days when my sister opens the one I just gave her), But I think it trounces my sister's Ipod (the exception being her 1st gen. shuffle, which I think has better synergy with KSC 75 but is almost on par when I use Portapros). There is a new forum comparing the 1st gen. Shuffle and Zune with both almost neck and neck (Zune was ahead at last read), which would mean that the Zune and Archos (to my ears) are pretty neck and neck with the Zune pulling ahead slightly.

Which Ipod does your sister have? My understanding is that the 1G Shuffles's SQ is similar to the 5G Ipod, and the SQ of the latest Ipods is better than that, with the Classic having the best SQ of the lot, and the Touch and Iphone having similar SQ.

I do enjoy the bigger screen, touchscreen and wifi of the touch (which is why I bought it over the Classic), and if the Archos 605 had a better or similar SQ than that, than it wouldn't be a bad buy as an alternative when I do not want my laptop with me.

Sis has 3G and her friend (who we've also compared against) has 4G. So, with the info in hand, to my ears, it would be a close race between the three. I'm basing the Zune SQ on what I read in the thread I mentioned, and could update that impression in a couple of days.

The fact that the Archos does what it does is exactly why I snagged it. Much easier to fanagle with a little PMP while sitting on a plane or airport than mucking around with my laptop. I plan on buying the associated DVR cradle and cables from Archos's website so that I can also make use of its ability to record directly from the TV or DVD player, which is another really nice feature I love about it.

I might just go down to the local Circuit City/ Bets Buy and try to demo a set.

Certainly would not be the worst thing to do. I have tried, and I cannot hear the hiss that is being discussed. I have used the phones in my sig, as well as a friend's Grado SR60 and Bose Triport, and I could not discern any hiss. But after reading that thread and looking at a conversation I had in another thread with an individual who used a pair of E500s, it seems like they hear the hiss with sensitive IEMs; as I don't use any or have a pair, I can't verify this on my own unit.

well actually the physical size of the 604 screen is bigger than the touch's. it's 4.2" diagonally vs the ipod touch's 3.5 inch screen. (also diagonal)

I really love safari on my iPhone--coupled with the iPhone UI, it slays the t|x default browsing. My only gripe is it doesn't (yet) support flash.

So, I'm curious as to what I would gain by taking the effort of installing mini opera on my T|X.

you would gain nothing, the only phone based browser that is comparable to safari is the nokia n series browser.

Yeah the official Mozilla Mobile browser just started very recently - there was/is an open-source unofficial Gecko-based "Minimo" browser but its nowhere near as polished as Opera for Mobile.
