iPod nano released

Sep 8, 2005 at 1:49 AM Post #121 of 265
I'm getting the 4GB white version. However, my thoughts...

- I'm surprised the nano is replacing the mini. The mini is still strong compared to competitors, so I think the mini and nano can co-exist.

- $199 for 4GB mini or 2GB nano + color screen? The mini sounds like a better value to me.

- The mini is a small iPod. The nano is more like a shuffle, especially considering how it's marketed and having the headphone jack on the bottom (dumb!). So what do people buy when they just want a small iPod and don't at all ever need any shuffle-like features or usage?

- Headphone jack on the bottom is awful. Not everyone wants to wear it on their arm or around their neck. How about just in the pocket? Not everyone wants to look like a loser when not exercising and using the nano.

- Will the accessory market for the mini just die overnight?

- Got scratches? The aluminum case of the mini is really scratch-resistant (but prone to dents if dropped) - heavy, but probably worth it.

- 14 hour battery life? I was expecting 24.

- The iPod mini will return at 6 and 8GB soon, with color screen, at $199 and $249 soon.

- No firewire support, charging through firewire only? Sorry, but it doesn't really matter. No one (read: most people) don't care. USB2 is everywhere, and firewire hasn't caught on as well.

- Looks great for the most part. But I wish it was wider and thus more proportional (a la iPod mini, unlike iPod shuffle), and then could have a slightly larger battery for longer battery life and a headphone jack in the proper place.

Actually the headphone jack is on the "top", at least if you clip it on your waistband upside down so that it is easier to read (I do that with the mini).

As soon as I figure out a horizontal clip the jack will be on the "side". Honest, these things don't have to be pointed at the zenith of the ecliptic to work.

Meh. Design is nice; I think it's certainly good looking. Probably still has the same mediocre implementation of one of the Wolfson codecs, so I imagine the SQ won't be much different from the current ipods. Disappointing to see that it doesn't have a custom EQ function; I simply will not purchase a DAP that doesn't have one, especially one whose presets leave a lot to be desired (as is the case with the Apple presets, I've found).

I imagine it will sell well, though, not to me. Had it had a custom EQ, I would have considered it, even taking into account its less-than-stellar headphone out.

Also disappointing to see no support for OggVorbis.

Yeah, but the news isn't all good for Creative. I heard their patent on rectangles was denied.

I tried to patent "Spad" but then I discovered it was widely used during WW-I. Even I ain't that old. I think that "prior art" stuff is bull-crap and Creative obviously agrees.

14 hours of battery life is worthless when you've got more than 1 GB on any DAP (flash or HD). Whoopee, you can load up 4 GB of music onto this iPod Nano, but you won't be able to hear it all in one sitting without the battery going out. Sounds like fun.

Call me back when Apple can make it at least 30 hours.

I like how thin it is. I think that's the best part. it makes me want to grab the regular iPod and yell, "why don't you stop eating that bread you fat cow - look at your thighs, you make me sick!"

You regularly listen to 14 hours of music in one sitting? Where do I sign up for your life?

apple says you don't need a screen, so suddenly someone realises screen is useless all along. now apply says 14hrs is enough, so fans thinks 'who needs more than 14 hrs anyway?'. there are times when more than 14 hrs is necessary. like last night i was listening to my sony hd5 and i fell asleep. that is 8 hrs there. i took it to work to day. 1 hrs gone. listening to it at work plugged in to speakers will probably take up around 6 hrs. and the sony hd5 still has juice to last me thru the journey home tonight. :P

Wow, while I was tooling around NYC gathering equipment for a Video Distribution system, the coolest gadget yet gets introduced - the Nano.

At first I had the reaction, when are flash players with removeable media going to have an Apple logo, but then the size is amazing...now I have to figure out if I really need to carry all my music with me or just a player so small that I will forget it is there...

On the battery issue - I am quite often away from home for days / weeks at a time. Some of this time could be spent away from a dock or possible charging method. Battery life is important

14 hours can go by very very quickly.

ROFL!

I heard it has a "reversed backlight" setting for night use. Now that's a good idea. Don't know if it's 100% true though.
