iPod / iPhone output digital audio via Apple Camera Connector for iPod?

Fascinated by this topic. I have the WADIA dock for home use but would LOVE to replace my iPod airhead with the version with the built-in-DAC and run USB digital audio from my portable iPod (I'd buy a new portable apple player if need be) so I could have decent digital conversion on-the-go.

If there's any news about any portable apple player that can deliver digital-output (while still letting the user control the music play) I'd be all over it. Let us know!

Theoretically any upcoming iOS 4.2 device (iPhone, iPod or iPad) could deliver wirelessly a digital audio stream, precisely an ALAC-coded stream, to an AirPlay-compatible device.

Not to divert the discussion, but I'm somewhat of a newbie and no one has really answered this question for me ....

I have an iPad and camera connector.  I use Westone 3s for portable listening.  My question is would the SQ be appreciably better outputting to a DAC/amp combo versus an amp alone via LOD & cable?

Yes, of course, I know it depends on the quality of the DAC/amp versus amp, but just how important is the DAC part of it?  Suppose I used a TTVJ Slim DAC/amp and compared performance under two scenarios, one when connected to the iPad via the USB camera kit and the other connected to the iPad via LOD/cable?  Would SQ be that much better for the first scenario, which utilizes the DAC, versus the second, which does not?

Thanks

Just my 2¢...

All things being equal the SQ would be maintained to a larger degree via a digital signal than it would be using a LOD, now... that's all things equal, which you stated wouldn't be the case, so really it's a moot point.

Edit... I just re-read your post and I think I missed the question... I think that both the DAC and AMP are pretty important to the resultant sound, but if forced to say which was more important, I'd say the amp by a long shot.  If given the choice of a mediocre amp with an amazing DAC vs. an amazing amp with a mediocre DAC i'd take the latter every time.  What good is a clean source without a good amp, but i'd rather not have to choose ;D

Thanks for your thoughts.

So, just to get more concrete, would you characterize the DAC internal to the iPad as "mediocre"? If so, then the DAC/amp combo would be the way to go, yes?

Don't forget about file type. I listen to lossless right out of an iPod through a HPA and usually find the sound to be just fine, at least for a portable rig. If amping or DACing (?) the iPad, just remember it must be self-powered. The iPad won't be able to power a USB DAC through the camera connector. The TTVJ Slim seems to fit the bill in that regard though. I've never tried this out of my iPad, though, since it really doesn't fit my uses.

Yes, I'm lossless all the way.

I also find the westone 3s to be great straight out of the HO from an iPod, but there are so many posts advocating even better SQ using LO and one of the many high end portable amps coming out specifically for IEMs (Pico Slim, TTVJ Slim, Arrow HE, RSA Shadow, etc). So I sometimes wonder what I'm missing. That puts me in the market for one of these amps.

Then I find out about the iPad/camera kit feature to output non-DAC signal via USB to external DAC/amp combo and I start thinking I need the extra versatility offered by these products (Pico w/DAC, RSA Predator, TTVJ w/DAC, FiiO E7, etc).

So now my head is spinning! And things are further complicated by the fact that unless one can attend CanJam, there is no way to 'test-drive' any of the options!

Help!
