Hey guys,
I want to actually get some nice sounds out of my ipod so I was wondering, what are the best overear closed back headphones that I could get and run without a headphone amp on my ipod?

the Buyer's guide has been out of date from a long while.

Anyway:

budget?
music tastes?
how are you going to use it?
Are in-ears ok? (in-ears isolate more and are different from earbuds)

I have one and it works and sounds awesome with my mp3 player.

Not directly related to your question but you might want to consider switching to a lossless format for your music makes a huge different!

Thanks for the input.
I listen to rock music mostly, though occasionally classical or rap. My budget is up to $300. It will mostly be used just for my ipod and without an amp. I also much prefer over ear to in ear and like the isolation that closed headphones offer. So with that in mind, which headphones would be best to get?

so you want portable stuff right? (then you are in the wrong forum lol)

If you want behind the neck or clip-on or IEMs, that is in the portable section...

now, are you new to good quality sound or not?

Agree and agree.
I have the M50 and the SRH840.
They both are very good with my iPod Classic.
I have only Lossless on my iPod as I also feel it makes a huge difference!

Good luck.

BTW... I don't use these portably. I have my Westone and Shure IE's for that.

my recommendation is the sure SRH840, they sound great, have closed back, and run about 150$, they have an impedance of 44ohm so you don't need an amp to run them.

the only drawback is the size and some people find them uncomfortable on the head, but you can mod them (there is a thread about the mod somewhere on this board)

they look like some kind of goofy space helmet, but they sound amazing....
