All,

I intend to explore and hopefully will be offering an iMod Classic 160GB.

My local Apple Store said that they *might* get them in stock today, but I need to call back and get confirmation before I drive all the way up there.

I also hope to find a good dac in there. I assume the dock pin-out on the iPod Classic will be idential to the others.

The iTouch will probably have the same dock pin-out as the iPhone, and with only 8GB and 16GB, I'm not sure I am going to look into the iMod for it (at least not until after the iMod Classic). We all want 160GB, baby!

Thanks for all your interest,

That's great news. Now the next question...will the new iPod Classic be Rockboxable? If so, then going from my 60GB 4G Rockboxed iMod to the new 160GB Rockboxed iPod Classic full of lots and lots of FLAC files will be the way to go.

Vinnie we all have faith in you to get it done.

I can feel my wallet starting to get lighter again....shhh don't tell my fiancee

I might be the only one, but I think I'm far more excited about the iPod classic than any of the other announcements made. Personally, I think it would've been cool for it to have wifi in order to take advantage of the iTunes wireless store interface, but I'm betting Apple is going to see how sales do before they switch the rest of their lineup to wifi. Either way, 160GB classic for me!

crikey, 160gb is simply amazing. i was holding out for a 32gb flash, but this would hold all of my mp3's with space to spare.

lets just cross our fingers that apple didn't encrypt the firmware like on the 2g nano, rockbox+160gb+yotank would be allmost too good!

I thought everyone knew this at this point. It seems that your perception of the ipod's headphone out quality is based on old and now irrelevant information.

That is possible. I am largely basing my opinion on measurements with the 4G iPod, as that is what I own and have dropped out of the head-fi forums for some time since. I have not seen actual measurements of the 5G iPod in comparison to the 4G to indicate the improvement. I have seen brief posts by people claiming that they perceive it as sounding better, but that could mean just about anything.

Can you point me to some measurements done with the 5G iPod headphone output? Preferably from someone who is also comparing it to the 4G iPod's headphone output.

I have compared (just using my ears) the 5G iPod's headphone out to the line out using the cheap remote accessory I mentioned before, and there's still a significant difference/improvement - especially in the bass, which indicates to me that the headphone out still has an issue with bass rolloff. As to whether the issue has been minimized or improved ... that would be interesting to see in graph form.

Should add that when I say "could mean just about anything", I refer to the fact that I can find just about as many subjective, perception-based posts claiming the 5G sounding better, as ones which claim they sound the same.

And having said all that, I most likely will be buying a 160GB iPod Classic nonetheless, just because of it being the best value, in terms of capacity and portability for the money. Just disappointed that I won't be getting better sound as well.

As you can see from the iMod of the 5.5G the DAC was not the problem if you didn't like the audio quality.....

I know the DAC in the 5.5G is very good, but what I'm saying is IF the one in the classic is BETTER.

I think you need to do an apples-to-apples comparison instead of the apples-to-oranges comparison that you're doing. Comparing the headphone out to the lineout and saying that the sound quality through the lineout is better really says nothing about how the ipod headphone out's quality fares compared to other DAPs. The lineout provides a superior signal so of course it's going to sound better than the headphone out. With certain exceptions (e.g., Cowon X5), this will the be case for any DAP that has both a headphone out and a good lineout.

I haven't done any technical measurements myself, but I've owned both the photo and non-photo 4g ipod, several 5g ipods, and tons of other DAPs. Take my comments for what their worth, but the difference between the headphone out of the 4g ipod and 5g ipod is quite noticeable. I got rid of the 4g ipod because I couldn't live with its sound quality whereas I thought the 5g had good sound quality but I eventually got rid of it simply because I got bored with it. I'm not saying that the 5g ipod has class-leading sound quality, but it's sound quality is now more or less in line with all the other DAPs on the market, and I've got a feeling that the new ipod classic won't take a step backwards. Before you write off our comments, just realize that you're being a bit hypocritical by discounting the non-technical impressions of others while using your own non-technical, hearing-only based impressions to buttress your argument that the 5g ipod has poor sound quality.

Anyway, if only technical measurements will convince you that the ipod's headphone out has improved, you might want to contact Bangraman. He's the person that recorded the measurements in that link you provided, and he's also a regular poster here. I wouldn't be surprised if he's commented on the 5g ipod's headphone out so you might want to do a search as well.
