I definitely do notice the Classic to have a little more hiss. I think it's best to bypass the headphone jack and use the dock, if you can.

Most definably.

I'm new to the audiophile world. What is that setup you're running? I'll soon be looking for portable amps for my iPod. I need something for in ears. I currently use SCL4s, but I will be upgrading eventually.

The iPod Classic 120 GB is inside of a Yo Tank case.

The amp is a Practical Devices XM5. I chose it because of the many features and expected great sound quality.

The iPod dock is from ALO Audio.

The IEMs are Etymotic ER4P.

I'm currently waiting for a new IEM, the Audéo PFE which I purchased here.

The XM5 is not the smallest nor the best sounding portable amp...so many choices out there.

I'm looking at this from the other direction - wondering whether to go from classic/amp to imod. Can you say what your gear is and what your feelings are about the SQ differences? Thanks.

hmm this is the first ive heard this discussion about the 5G and the 6G.

I will have to do a test at the next meet with my new classic 120 and someones 5G. Maybe even a blind test to prove it either way.

Well I was going to get a 2nd hand 5.5g but think i will just jump in and get a classic. I have found a store in town with some 160Gbs left. Is there any difference between the 120 or 160Gb? Did I not read some problems with the 160Gb and possibly an EU sound level limit (though that won't be a problem as I want to amp it).

OT but can I play FLAC using the iPod software or do I need to Rockbox it?

Isn't the reason that RWA only does the imod on the 4 / 5 / 5.5 and not the classic is because the classic is inferior to them?

Maybe is completely the oposite.
Classic doesn't need Imod...

You need a 5.5G or earlier to use Rockbox which will play FLAC. If you don't care about Rockbox then a new Classic is the best option (IMO).

From RWA's own site

"Please Note -- The iMod is only offered for the 4th Generation and 5th/5.5 Generation iPods, as they contain the high-quality internal Wolfson dac chip that makes doing the iMod worthwhile. "

i tested the two side by side before with the same song. I think the 5/5.5g is better than the classic with piano recordings

the 5/5.5g sounded more solid than the blurry/veiled classic's representation
