Ipod classic - rockbox - its happening.

Charge in Rockbox, not Emcore.
 
(Hold the Menu key on the Classic as you plug in AC power. That will prevent it from going into USB communication mode.)

im aware of this and its what im doing but im asking say i forget to charge it and it goes dead is it stuck dead then? or will it boot back up to rockbox if i plug it in and try to boot emcore to in hand boot rockbox to then charge it.

I think that you are thinking too much. Insofar as no one has ever reported a problem, I am guessing that it will not be a problem. Be sure to report back.  
 
BTW burning Lio-ion batteries down to the quick isn't good for them.

i realize that its just i just got this like 3 days ago cause my fuze v2 died on me. Didn't want to have droped 229.99 on a brick later lol. asides from that fear everything is rock solid and balance control is a life saver.

Ive tried lurking around for the answer to my problems but alas I cannot find them. I tried putting rockbox on a classic 160gb and was able to get it to install, but when I'd transfer music it would freeze, and consequently freeze my computer, so I am now trying to put it on a classic 120gb and when I get to the emcore installer it wont let me use menu and play to accept.....Ive been pulling my hair out for days, can anyone help?

whats your OS and if you got skype (mines rvcjew) I would be glad to help you. My classic now freezes my friends macbook pro when plugging it in, but my win 8 laptop works fine with USB 2.0, and my desktop even before i had rockbox only works with my USB 3.0 ports lol( some driver conflict when in a 2.0 port i could care less it maxes transfer speed with the 3.0 port anyway, thinks its one of my vmware devices). Because of the USB port issue i had to use my laptop to do it since bootstrapper for emcore got an error and would never open the ubi drive.

I have skype also, but I have to go back to work today so I dont have time to fiddle with it today (mines laughngethigh). I was finally able to get it to work on an 80gb ipod classic, but now I cant fit all my music onto it. Im using apple approved cables, and I only have usb 2.0 ports on both computers ...maybe the hard disks are bad on those other ipods?

so I've been looking around this thread for a solution to my lost music which, as I was assured by the writers of this tutorial, was going to be there after I finished the rockboxing, but alas is not there. Has anyone a solution for my annoying problem that has to be fixed otherwise I won't be able to keep the ipod and will have an incredibly angry mother? Any help will be very much appreciated

Im pretty sure rockboxing a classic wipes it and so anything on it before will be lost forever

Well technically speaking not really (special recovery through data experts), but still shoot and what's worse is my laptop died so I'll have to wait before I'll even be able to get music on it damnit

Is possible that the disks are bad but I doubt it how old are the pods?

The youngest one (160gb) is late 2009, I dont know about the 120gb one though. My dad sent me like 20 in the mail that he said he got from pawn shops. So Im guessing some of them arent in the best of condition internally.

When running the original firmware press and hold 'Menu' and 'Select' at the same time until the Apple logo appears. Then press and hold 'Rewind |<<' and 'Select' to enter the diagnostic boot. There you can check the harddisk. In general, a high number of reallocs and pending sectors (in SMART data) means your drive is failing and will retire eventually.
 
After installing Emcore the music from iTunes should still be on your hard drive, but it's located in hidden folders (mainly 'iPod_Control' on the root). Make sure that Windows shows hidden folders. There you will see a lot of folders (again) with strange-named music files (for example F30 - UQYL.mp3) in them. The ID3 tags of those files should still be okay, If you're planning to use the file explorer in Rockbox this is quite an awkward way to get your music back. I much more prefer to drag&drop everything directly from my computer and use the Rockbox file explorer after safely removing the device. But if that's not an option, you're stuck with copying this hidden stuff.
 
@Derezzler: which Rockbox build are you using to mount the iPod as an USB device? Use the daily builds because for some iPods the experimental undervolting is a bit too much (like mine). In my experience a USB 2.0 port (without any fancy Intel/AMD drivers for it, just Windows generic) directly on the motherboard works best. It could be that your drives are faulty, but then you would've noticed on the original firmware as well.

Firstly, I'd like to thank the OP, aroldan, and the members of this thread. I've read through nearly every page of this thread and you've all helped me a lot.
 
I'm currently running an 80GB Gen 6 on emCore 2.3 r866 with one of aroldan's builds. I'm loving Rockbox's FLAC support, drag-and-drop, dynamic playlists, and customization! However, I have run into a couple of issues and I was hoping someone could kindly help me with them. I've tried looking elsewhere and I am at my wits end with some of these things to the point where I almost want to give up on rockbox and find something else.
 
My main problem is I wish to change the charge/USB mode behavior, such as in these patches:

I used to think dragging these into my rockbox directory would do the trick, but I found out I have to compile them myself. Now, I like to consider myself a pretty tech-savvy person but I just could not get it to work. Is there some kind soul who could perhaps lead me through it or do it for me? I don't want to have to do this every time I try a new build, but I'll stick to one if it means I can have this. 
 
The rest of my problems don't bother me nearly as much. I can live with them. But of course, if I can get them resolved too I'd have a perfect portable player.
 
The database appears to be really inconsistent. Sometimes it loads surprisingly fast, almost instantly. Most of the time I can't fathom why it takes at least 30 seconds to load a playlist for an album. Sometimes it will freeze completely, requiring a restart. I've tried using simpler themes that pull less data, using smaller playlists, resetting numerous times. Nothing I've tried seems to work permanently. It's irritating to have a song begin playing up to a minute after you've selected it. I understand high quality files take more power, but it happens with anything.  Does this happen to anyone else? Could I have a bad drive? Are there any tricks to speeding it up? The spindown or anti-skip buffers? Is it maybe how I arrange my collection. I don't know.
 
It may be related, but I often find my device crashing with an annoying tone, white screen, and an error message saying something like "data abort". It won't respond until I reset it. Is this an issue with emcore?
 
Sometimes when selecting a new playlist, I get an error saying "error accessing playlist control file". When I googled it, all I saw were responses saying "don't use the database" which isn't really a solution...Stopping playback before selecting seems to work, but I was curious if anyone else had this issue.
 
This is a pretty minor thing but why is it that I cannot add albums or artists to playlists? Why do I have to select each song individually? It works in the file browser but not in the database. Why is that?
