I was thinking more like buy the V-cap dock with an iMod for a somewhat cheaper price.

Here's another wrinkle (because obviously there's not enough wrinkles in this thread!):

So far there's no RockBox for the 6G iPod Classic.

Until that happens (and it may never happen) then I have to stick with the 5.5G.

Having heard ogg-vorbis files I'm not going back! So I will definitely be needing RockBox.

And so I'm waiting patiently for news on the availability of the 160GB hard drive and whether or not it can be installed into a 5.5G iPod. Then that will be all the impetus I need to finally send my iPod to Vinnie for iModding.

Oh I'm not 100% sure of anything except that it's not available now for the 6G.

But so far I haven't read anything too encouraging on the RockBox forums.

I really hope it does happen.

I am going to make this package very attractive price wise. Its going to come with a 80Gig back iMod, and a iMod to Vcap Dock cable. I will have a few RCA to RCA options or a RCA to mini option for the Vcap dock to your amp IC. I will post something early this week.

Thx

Ken

nelamvr6 is correct. Given that (1) the hardware in the 6G is completely different from any supported Rockbox platform, (2) there is no documentation available to the Rockbox team for the 6G hardware, and (3) the 6G is most likely locked down in the same manner as the Nano 2G, it is not likely that Rockbox will be available for the 6G any time in the foreseeable future.

Hi all,

I looked through most of the posts of this great thread (thanks Vinnie by the way for your research), and I am actually wondering if the 6G iPod Classic architecture/components are the same for the 80gb and 160gb models. Vinnie posted the DAC model as "Apple 338S0394" but by looking at the enlarged picture of at the bottom of a website (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPod/iPod-Classic) I noticed a different model "Apple 338S0445". The last three digits are different, so would it be possible that the $100 difference of the two models concerns more than the storage capacity, such as other components?

Another similar concern, is regarding the iTouch iPod, and its internal architecture/components. Is this model any different from the iPod Classic 160gb or 80gb, and could this mean potentially higher sound quality, or modifications?

Thanks in advance to anybody with info on these two issues.

I doubt it makes no sense to design two completely different architectures for the same model range. Like Apple is notorious for having the simplest product range in existence. It would make no sense. I think its the same thing with just a different number. I think if the 160GB was better, Apple would want to say it cause its the more expensive one! As for the touch....

Haha, the money for my iMod and vCap dock went through 3 days before the price drop (the day before the classic was announced). I actually expected the price to go up... Apple showed me they do listen after all.

I love my 1st gen shuffle. My next upgrade will be the 160gb classic, I only need to know one thing.

Would the 160gb drive work in the 5.5 gen iMod?

If so, it would double the capacity AND increase battery life. 0.02 mw per gb read. This is one highly efficient hard drive.
