I read that the 5g is unable to take the 240gb while the 5.5 is able to.
Also, is the included backplate in that package sufficient to accomodate the hdd or do I have to get another?
Any explanation for that and what happens if I use it on my 5g anyway?

You can buy an used and working ipod 5.5g off craiglist for a very cheap price. I recently bought a working 5.5g off craiglist for $30 as a backup. Most people selling the 5g/5.5g just want to unload the old pods without knowing the inside beauty (wolfson). Alternatively you can also buy the 5.5g from ebay. If you want to take a chance, buy the broken ones hopefully with only failed HDD and you will replace the HDD anyway.
 
The 240GB HDD's are available from ebay and here is one. Please note the 5g/5.5g 30GB model needs new and thicker back plate if you decide to go with the 240GB HDD. The seller in that link actually includes this new back plate for the upgrade.

I am not sure about that but I do know you will need a thick back plate to fit the 240GB HDD. Also it's my understanding the 5g has only 32MB Ram while the 5.5g has 64 MB Ram. Just based on the ram, I wouldn't recommend the 240GB upgrade for the 5g.
 
The ipod videos are cheap now. So another option is to have two ipod videos upgraded to 120GB each.  When one runs out of battery or dies, you have a back up ready for use.

One must first check the logic board number
 
If you've a 5G iPod video then the logic board no will be 802-1763A and this supports only 30 gb/60gb.
If you've the 5.5th G iPod video then it has the logic board no 802-1975A and this supports up to 240Gb hard disk.

I have a 5g/30GB and upgraded to a 120GB HDD with no issue. So I am not sure where you get the info that the 5g supports only 30 gb/60gb.

Let me clarify.
 
I am not saying that the 30 GB model doesn't take any disks bigger than 60 GB, what I am trying to say is that on the 5th generation iPod only the logic boards # 802-1975A accepts disks bigger than the 60 GB.

I also believe you are correct in saying the 5g has the 802-1763A board, but it does accept 120GB HDD from my own experience but I believe it will not accept the 240GB HDD.
 
BTW, the 5.5g has the search feature yet the 5g doesn't.

I have an old 5th gen iPod with the old board (I has printed the 820-1763A part #) and will replace the drive with a 80 GB one to test if it accepts it.

Just make sure the 80GB HDD has the same thickness (5mm) as the 30GB HDD, otherwise you will need to change to a thicker back plate. As you know the 5.5g/80GB is thicker than the the 30GB model. My 120GB HDD (TOSHIBA 120GB MK1234GAL) has the same thickness (5mm) as the 30GB HDD so I didn't have to change the back plate. Why not upgrade to a 120GB HDD unless you already have a 80GB HDD?

Let me update this, the board on the 30GB iPod is bad not recognizing any hard drives, I tried the 30 and 80Gb and nothing.
 
So will not be able to test.

You were right, it takes drives bigger than 60GB. 

 
I just replaced the 30GB drive on a second iPod 5th gen I got off cragslist for $10 with a slim 160GB drive from a 7th gen iPod and it works perfectly.

I've been skimming this thread, and I'm a bit confused.  Is it possible to put a 240gb drive in my iPod classic 6th generation?  It is the thick model.  My drive died and I'm not completely happy with the iPod touch sound quality.  I was thinking of trying to mod my classic because i want lossless files on my ipod anyway.  Please tell me this is possible...
