Is iPod 5 and 5.5 different? How can you tell which one you have? I have a black 30gb
Yes they are slightly different. The 5.5G has a search facility which the 5G does not. If you go into Settings/Main Menu after the Radio option should be Search if it's a 5.5G. All 80GB Classics are 5.5G. In the Settings/About the model number for a 5.5G is MA450LL. For a 5G it is PA146FB. There is a myth that the sound quality is inferior on the 5.5G, where this comes from I don't know. For me the 5.5G has very slightly improved sound quality via the firmware.

Slight correction, all iPod 5 or 5.5G comes with only 30GB or 60GB which are known as iPod Video while 80GB / 120GB / 160GB are known as iPod Classic from 6th Gen onward.
Myth or Legend, both are still using the same Wolfson DAC. Only difference is the Search option.
Well they were known as iPod Videos by the public but their names were iPod 5th generation and then what the public called the 5.5 genereration was the iPod 5th generation (1st revision). These came in 30/60/80GB capacities. There is a 5.5G with 80GB. I know because I still own one. Then came the iPod Classic 6th generation followed by the iPod Classic 6th generation (1st revision) and then the iPod Classic 6th generation (2nd revision) commonly known as the iPod Classic 7G. These were in 80/120/160GB capacities. The Classics used the Cirrus DAC chips which some don't think were as good as Wolfson's DAC. I was incorrect to call the 5th generations Classics.

Why not go to a pawnshop to listen to the different generations with as much knowledge as you can mister beforehand. The 5.5 was and is the ENHANCED which also became the U2 model that sold for a premium. You may have to replace things on it like batteries or whatever so there is room for negotiation that way.

Somebody knows a good place to buy a short, good quality 30-pin line out dock? Any suggestions for a good portable amp to connect to, as small as possible?
Thanx
