iPhone 4S

Didn't really plan on using my new iPhone 4S for audio, but I'll have to test it now.  Maybe in the next week or so I'll get around to making an XLR to mini adapter for my HD800 and then report back with impressions on SQ.  I only have my home reference system to compare it to, so don't expect over-enthusiastic opinions.

Edit:  Actually I have an iPod Classic and iPod Touch (2nd gen) that haven't sold yet so I can compare to those.

Current touch is pretty average in sound, the 3GS/4/4GS iPhones and even the Nano are much better. The 6G nano is on par with the 3GS.

6G Nano graph, 4G Touch graph

Thanks so much for that Inks - must say I'm surprised, as I thought the sound on the current Touch was identical to the equivalent iPhone - purely on the basis of what I have read.

I don't have one for the shuffle, but as you can see (iPhone4 graph), the 4G touch doesn't stand against the IP4.

IP4>4S>3GS=Nano6G>>Classic7G>Touch4G

Heard them all, except he 4GS.

My mate had an iPhone 4 - really loved it right up to the day it was stolen in Bali. Drove home to me the danger of sinking that much money into a smartphone.

I always use the EQUALIZER app to listen to music on the iPhone 4 and now the 4s - IMHO, it just sounds better across the board than the normal player, even without any EQ (I normally leave it flat, only occasionally giving a +2db 1.5q 44htz boost.)

I know some people like listening right out of the headphone jack - I can't do that unless I absolutely have to.  I have a cheap micro LOD and the iBasso T3D and it's a drastic improvement over the headphone amp - the EQ app is also a slight improvement.

Sorry for not updating the initial impressions - the problem is, my LOD has gone bad and my backup is just this fiio LOD which is ok, but perhaps not really good enough for critical evaluation for such a discerning audience. My unnuanced take is that it sounds very similar - perhaps a tiny bit better, certainly no worse. I loved the sound of the 16gb 4, so I love the sound of the 64gb 4s that much more!

My desktop system (amarra 2.3 + yulong d100) is certainly more resolving, but not necessary any more euphonic on a lot of music, in fact, on anything that's compressed is generally going to sound worse.

Thanks. I was thrown off by the all caps. There are a bunch of equalizer apps. I'll give this one a shot.

I've used that one and EQu, and it's better than EQu.

I have been reading reports of battery issues with the iPhone 4S, but they do not appear to be widespread, have you (or anyone else here) had any problems ?

Listening to apple lossless on a 4S 64 GB > pico slim > 1964 Q4 IEM.  Response is nothing short of incredible.  Very nice sound stage.  Will have to keep listening for any meaning discriminating specifics but overall like the sound much better than my Gen 5 iPod.

Straight out of the jack, I still prefer my Sony A728; the 728 is crisper, punchier, and livelier. However, the 728's hiss sounds like a muffled rain-storm while the iPhone 4S is eerily quiet.
