You know that I can order one direct for $20 from FiiO shipped straight from HK right?  Good try though.

James,

Can this be use as a source switcher into a headphone amp?

yes

So the Fiio HS2 arrived today. Using two sources both Lossless - iPhone 5 via LOD to CMoy and iPod Classic via CLAS to CMoy. Both CMoys bought at same time (one belongs to a friend) on identical specs. Result? Not easy to detect virtues of having a CLAS (ignoring cable differences etc etc blah blah blah). Buy hey, since I've bought it, the CLAS that is, enjoy it LOL

LOL it's hi-fi logic. Expensive? Must be good.
Get the product and you can't hear a difference. Meh, it's expensive, and I can pretend to say it makes a difference to make myself feel better.

I always thought external iPod DACs were a waste of money.

I've tried other types of signal switchers in the past and found that some of them can add background noise to the audio stream, things like hiss or hum noises.

I was wondering if has anyone noticed the FiiO HS2 having any adverse affect to the sound? Or is it dead silent with no background noise?

Opinions from people who actually tried the HS2 are appreciated.

I'm just curious as to why you chose to use two amplifiers for comparison? I think that for doing comparisons like this, you would want to eliminate as many variables as possible. I.E., run source A + source B > HS2 > CMoy > headphones. Who knows? one amp might be slightly colored compared to the other despite identical specs.

I'm not doubting the outcome of your test - Don't get me wrong. When I A/B, I try to keep the cables the same, amp same, just have one variable - the source or amp or whatever I'm testing.

That said enjoy the clas regardless since you have it! LOL.

You are right. I never thought about it that way. Thanks.

And come to think of it, I could also use two amps, one for each headphone out.

Yeah, isn't it great?

You can try a couple amps with a source, a couple sources with or without an amp...ahh my head is spinning! If you have a 3.5mm "y" splitter, you can rig it up to switch a source with and then without an amp. That way you can test if your amp is adding something useful to your chain.

I find HS2 to be silent, sometimes I feel I should listen only through HS2, because to my ears it sounds really good...may be some weird placebo effect!

Thanks for your feedback. It would be great to get a few more opinions before I take the plunge on this little device. Specially from people with sensitive IEM because they usually are quite tricky if you don't get a black background.

Sometimes there's noise when you are switching but other than that no. (Tried ES5 and JH10X3)
