Introducing the HIFIMAN HE-R9!

They are a fun, bassy and pretty affordable set of bass cans.

The R9 actually got me to dig up an old set of T50RPmk3 I had self-modded many years ago to do exactly what the R9 is going for (dark, n' bassy), and by god, I forgot just how far a T50rp can take you just with some light modding and some pads. Bass was colossal in size and quantity, with pretty decent texture too. The rest of the range was actually not bad at all, save for a slight 4k peak. I encourage anyone who wants insane-o bass for cheap-ish to pick up a set and tune it to your hearts content :)

I decided to pull these out tonight. I discovered a new band today called The Cold Stares. Blues-rock and they are great. I bought an hour and a quarters worth of their music spanning 2015 to 2022.
Anyway, the R9's really liked them. The bass on the drums was very strong, but not excessive. I realized a bit later that I had the bass boost on at 10hz. I turned that off and left just a touch of 3D sound effect.
They are wonderful. My memory was fun with lumpy bass. These sound much better that. I am finishing up with the Cold Stares and about to get into Marcus King's new album that dropped today. These are great with the rock/blues genres! I am guessing they won't be nearly so sweet with horn jazz.

Used these every day for a week. Friday to tonight (Thursday). I Really like these. Great for new rock, old rock, some pop and blues. Not at their best with horn jazz, which I kind of expected. Only downside was that they seemed very closed in. I know that is the nature or closed backs, but some do better than others.

These are a Great value and really bring the bass when the song calls for it.

I took tomorrow off as a days vacation since it is a long weekend in Canada (Labour Day on Monday). Putting six closed backs on the table in the morning and it is four days of closed back comparo's. :L3000:

Which 6 are you going to compare? I assume Cascade and HE-R9 are 2 of the 6 closed backs?

Yes sir. Along with T60 Argons, Focal Elegia's, iBasso SR2's and LSA HP-2's.

Just discovered that the R-9 work really well for gaming, thru the 3.5mm jack on the PS5 controller.

@Shane D So, where does the HE-R9 stand compared to those other closed backs?
They are bass monsters, but are going up for sale this weekend. For me the new king of the mountain is the Focal Radiance. I am also keeping the CFA Cascades as they always make me smile.
The LSA HP-2 'phones now reside in British Columbia. The Elegia's moved to Ontario in exchange for a Rebel amp. T60 Argons are on CAM now and the R9's will be following them.

My closed back situation is settled for a very long time. :L3000:

Is there anything that be done about the clamp pressure?

Bend the metal band close to the cups, they are loose for me. So i had to bend them a little, also the pads are quite shallow and stiff so a good seal is a must for good sound.

Do you have a picture of how you did yours?

Tryed to change the pads, also changed out the cable for something better. The pads has a different mounting system than the Sundara. There is small clips around you pull out, the pad is also glued to the ring. So in changing them the original pad gets destroyed.

Still early testing, sound is much the same. Maybe a tad bit less highs. Comfort is much better👍
