Introducing the HIFIMAN EF400 Balanced Desktop DAC/Amplifier!

If you know someone who has the HE6... (any version, even the Adorama are fine) invite him to your house to try them with the EF400... so you will have a clearer idea of the "end game"
Personal opinion... obviously.

How do you guys cope with the high output impedance (10 ohms IIRC)? I don't quite understand this design decision. Are't most hifiman cans low impedance planars?
I don't know about planars but I have a Solstice amp, which has 3 adjustable output settings.

https://garage1217.com/g1217_005.htm

0.1 ohm output
31 ohm output
68 ohm output

On my Lawton TH900 (dynamic driver, 25 ohm) I thought the 0.1 ohm sounded too sterile and cold, and 31 ohm sounded more tubey and rich and warm. 68 ohm it start to skew with things too much.

So even though 31 ohm is "wrong" but it sounded more musical.

My guess is that the 10 ohm output on EF400 makes it slightly more warmer and musical (again, also depending on the impedance curve of headphone).

Oh and all 4 different output on EF400 have different output impedance. 3.5 mm single ended is 5 ohm and 1/4 inch jack single ended is 18 ohm? Not sure about balanced jacks.

Yes, most of them are low impedance planners, which are generally not impacted by the output impedance of the amp, unlike many headphones with dynamic drivers. At least, that's how it has been explained to me.

Did anyone ever get their EF400 repaired? It seems like the video that was published that showed all units were performing incorrectly disappeared into oblivion.

I see. Didn't know that about planars. Thanks!

You can actually see this in the impedance measurements of a headphone. Most planars are flat whereas dynamics generally have a pretty wonky shape. Some people like having a higher output impedance because it will change the tuning of the headphone.

That's a wonderful exhibit of "a picture is worth a thousand words" -- I had not realized that a 600 Ohm output impedance would have that much impact on the FR of an HD 800, but that certainly explains why high output impedance amps might be appreciated in certain cases.

I might be wrong, but I think HiFIMAN had released some kind of firmware update to resolve the issues? Or perhaps they recalled them?

Has anyone replaced the power cord for a longer one? Anything specific to look for in a replacement?

Want to use this on my standing desk and avoid surge protectors (searched but didn’t see anything)
In the US Amazon basics brand has several cord lengths to choose from that will work fine for the EF400.

If you guys might be interested, here is my take on the EF400 (it features english subtitles):

I'm now rocking a chord mojo 2 as my main DAC, and sometimes I do miss the EF400 a bit!

I bought the EF400 last Christmas and returned it because of the lack of coax and optical, but just like you I really missed how good it sounds and bought it again in the Hifiman summer sale for just 300 €, quite a bargain, Just added an Aune X8 to connect a my CD player and my old PS3 and I'm a happy camper :)

No issues so far, it is working flawlessly and I use it every day.

Didn't know your YouTube channel. Italian language is beautiful.. suscribed!

I have just received an "Open box" EF400

The volume knob is very stiff to move off from zero and then feels rough and make a grinding sound (though it works fine otherwise)

I assume this is not normal?

Not normal at all. It should be smooth and quiet.
