Introducing Shanling M30 - Modular Desktop Hi-Fi Streaming Player
Aug 18, 2021 at 4:15 PM Post #766 of 1,659
I took a chance and have ordered a Shanling M30. Should arrive later this week. Why?

Shanling has proven they know what to do with audio engineering, I was very impressed with M8. The house sound is simply superb and the pics @Whitigir provided confirm the amount of dedication the Shanling team have put into engineering high fidelity music systems. In addition, the Shanling remote control app does work with my M1 Apple Silicon Mac mini, I hope to control M30 remotely with this app.

I am putting my trust in Shanling. I expect them to release an updated Digital Player Module and continue with the amp/dac modules in the future as M30 is expected to have longevity. I understand the software issues are well documented but this will improve over time, I will document any issues I have as well. Some months after release, the experience should be palatable.

The versatility, different amps, connection flexibility indicates the clever engineering of Shanling. I am eager to experience what Shanling considers the very best they have to offer and I will continue to support them as long as they continue to deliver on the M30 system in the future.

You will enjoy the M30. Looking forward to your impressions

Does Airplay from Mac (from Apple Music app) to M30 (receiving) support Apple Music lossless format?

Also does Airplay work from Roon app (eg from Mac to M30) as well?
That should be a question for @Shanling as indeed Airplay is listed in the product description but I don't find M30 on any of my Apple devices as an Airplay target unless I am connecting it directly via Bluetooth.
I personally don't believe that M30 will support Airplay 2 but if at all then Airplay 1.

For hires I have successfully paired M30 with my Sony Soundbar via LDAC going up to 96khz.

Experimenting with my MacBook Pro 2017 and iPhone11Pro I did not succeed to get a different bluetooth protocol than SBC!
I haven't found any option to access any developer options to configure that more deeply as it is possible on standard Android devices.
Not an issue for me personally as I am either playing from the local apps, using USB connection or for watching TV using the LDAC connection

Edit: I found the airplay option! At the very bottom of the sound settings

Edit2: playing through Airplay to M30 from my MacBook Pro 2017 there's a hires symbol / rate displayed in Apple Music, so far so good.
However it seems to be limited to 16bit/44.1khz also when playing higher bit rates - see last 3 screenshots.

Glad you found it. Yes, need to scroll to the bottom. Works well too.

As for the limitation on bit rate, that’s an Airplay limitation unfortunately.

Not sure how exactly Apple Music works with Airplay, that's more question to Apple.

Airplay is normally limited to 16/44.1, so it should do lossless, but no Hi-Res.

Airplay can be simply turned on/off in swipe down quick access menu.

How to install Apple Music on m30
only through future FW-update.
Shanling has confirmed that this is on their list for all of their current devices.
Playing full hires through USB (or CD quality via Airplay) is working like a charm though in the meantime

Thanks for the information playing through usb is working like charm
Yup. I used to have USB out of the iPad Pro or Mini into the M30. Now I just have the M1 MacMini USB into the M30 and use the Remote app to control play back. The advantage of playback from the iPad is that the bit rate is automatically switched. The MacMini does not yet have that functionality.

On Apple Music IOS the bit rate seems to be limited via USB
On MacOS the same song was 96khz looking at my Screenshot above, now it's only 44khz 🙄
No general limitation of IOS as e.g. Tidal is doing twice unfold and bit rate is shown like 96khz on M30.

Seems to be an IOS issue - just tested the same song on L&P W2: also showing only 44.1 kHz!

For MacOS, you have to manually set the bit rate output in Audio Midi setup. For the M30 you can set up to the max which is something like 768 kHz.

that'S clear. What I am talking about is the supported bit rate displayed in Apple Music app itself and the resulting rate on M30.
In both cases you get a limitation playing on IOS vs MacOS.
Just tested Shanling M8 - Apple Music, example song Eagles "Take It Easy" - 24/192khz on both MacBook with M30 hooked up and M8 playing local AppleMusic app and only 24/48khz on iPhone/IPad with latest IOS

@FooFighter, not sure if you are facing less than bit perfect playback on iOS into M30. If that is the case it should not be because it is bit perfect playback from iOS into M30.

This was me playing Apple Music using USB DAC from my iPad mini into the M30 earlier this month.

Thx @Kiats
Might it be that this is a hardware limitation and not a software limitation?
Your iPad mini is quite new isn't it?
My MacBook Pro is from 2018 and my iPhone is an Iphone11Pro.
Happy about other Apple owners to test and comment!
