Introducing hip dac 3! The Legacy Continues!

Interesting. Does USB-C remove the need for the camera adapter kit to get hi-res from an iPhone or iPad?

I had an iPhone X previously and got bit perfect CD quality or hi resolution output from the lightning port using the lightning to USB-C cable that iFi supplied with the Gryphon or a ddhifi TC28 lightning to USB-C adapter and any USB-C data cable.

The Apple camera adapter isn’t the only path to proper output from lightning.

With the USB-C equipped iPad and now iPhone 15 any normal USB-C data cable will provide CD quality and hi res bit perfect output, nothing else required

I'm not really interested in using MQA more in removing it but it actually makes no difference if it's there or not. I don't stream and would never use tidal if I did anyway. Any difference is down to mastering anyway more than if its MQA or Redbook or hi res IMO.
My iPhone supports GSM and CDMA. I will only ever use GSM but I don’t feel the need for a firmware without CDMA.

Yes. With iPhone 15 usb-c to usb-c OTG will do. For other iPhones usb-c to lightning OTG will do. Both are supplied with the hip-dac3.

I believe it has to be a usb-c OTG cable. A regular cable will not work.

Every single USB-C to C cable I have works, even a basic Apple supplied cable packaged essentially for charging.
Ok. Then there is no more need to buy expensive OTG cables anymore.

It seems not.

Everyone likes visual evidence so below is my iPad mini 6 into iFi Gryphon with an Apple supplied cable and a Belkin USB-A to C cable with a basic A to C adapter with no OTG feature.

Both supporting 24/192 FLAC from Tidal into Gryphon.

My iPhone 15 worked the same but was used for the pictures

Makes me wonder why those OTG cables are so expensive if a regular cable also can work. I payed 25,- euro for my Fiio usb-c to lightning OTG cable.

I believe it is simply a case of "lightning" being an Apple Thing and USB-C being what Apple changed to...:xf_wink:

OTG was needed for certain Android devices as well

Cheers!!

I think that is just the benefit of USB-C, its use on a device has to meet standards that include more or less universal compatibility, to the best of my understanding at least.

I am not even sure there is such a thing as C to C OTG connectivity. As best I can tell USB-C OTG cables have some other termination on the other end such as a micro or more commonly female A.

Seems that C to C is just a standard cable whether it be a version of normal USB or Thunderbolt depending on the transfer capabilities of the connected devices, obviously not a consideration for audio.

Again, to the best of my understanding.

EDITED TO ADD: I only have two Android devices, FiiO and Shanling DAPs. I just tested them and they both go C to C on iFi devices with a standard Apple supplied cable which is most definitely not OTG.

It is not audiophile worthy if it is not expensive :)

An ordinary printer cable will usually work for connecting a notebook to a DAC, yet many are happy to spend big $$$ for audiophile grade USB cables

Some call this "redistribution of wealth" :D

I do not want to pay for MQA ergo I will buy when it is no longer on the device in any way at all. I can wait. :beerchug:

That certainly may be coming! Probably not for a bit though.

Cheers!!

Why so much hate against MQA? 😊
Doesn’t sound bad (I know, because of filters)
It’s like the airbag on your car. You don’t have to use it but it’s nice it is there (I know this remark doesn’t make any sense 🤪).
