iM716 DIY Pod Removal (aka, Podectomy)

Definitely less because I remember hearing the cable on windy days or when in front of a fan. Now I don't hear it.

Yes these are the stock tri-flanges. I got a bit of a scare when the copper tracing broke on one tab. I had to scrape the varnish off and solder. But it seems ok now.

I also inadvertently tested the strength of the cable when it got caught on my bike. It got a nasty tug. It survived. The epoxied shrink tubing did its job. The knots at the earphones did their work too.

So, I talked DanT into doing the PodMod716 to my Altec Lansing IM716 (money talks, and BS walks), and they are on their way back to me

I can now choose between 22ohm, 33ohm, 47ohm, 55ohm, 69ohm, 80ohm, and 102ohm, depending on the combination of the 3 switches that are thrown.

Here are the photos he took for me!

Nice!

Did you bypass the flex pcb?
Did you find out if it is a resistor or diode on the flex?

0 ohm as well.

Ha ha. Pod the way it should have been!

No I did not bypass the flex pcb and diode (if it is one). I soldered on the oem spots.

After some hours of use i realized that I had lost some bass with the re-cable. Unfortunately, the exercise of finding and trying out donor cables can be exhausting and expensive. I might just have to buy new IEMs. Is the Etymotic ER6 better or same sounding as the IM716 with 47ohm resistors?

Gonna keep the pod until I find a resistor that suits me.

What have you used to connect the resistors to the wires here?

I received my new im716's on Monday, and after a quick listen straight from the box and after a few days burning in i couldn't see what the fuss was all about, even though they were a huge jump up from my old Creative ep-630's.
After a quick consultation with jSatch, i carried out the mod this morning, using 47 ohm metal film resistors. YOWZER, i can hear what all the fuss is about now. superb sound, and for the price i paid for the 'phones, delivery and the whopping 12 cents for the 2 resistors i think i have had one of the biggest portable audio bargains ever. To my ears these phones sound as good if not better than some 'phones costing twice maybe three times as much.
Thanks to jSatch and all you other folks with your comments on what resistor gives what effect on sound, etc. Very happy man here

I envy you. My oem cable broke and I replaced them with Apple oem cable. It doesn't have the same bass. How much do new ones cost now and where did you order them? I am tossing between the IM716 or an Ety ER6. Among the Ety line, which one will be closest to the IM716 depodded?

I can't comment on which ety would be closest to the depodded im716's, but i will say that whatever one compares will probably cost a lot more than the 716's ( i am keen to find out which one compares myself, purely out of interest ).

As for who i bought them off, Amazon, US$49.95 plus postage ( US$12 to Australia)
