When I was a kid I loved music and growing up I was sourounded
by music and great stereo equipment that was part of who my
father is. One way that I have always been able to relate to
my parents is through music and with my dad, a mutual love
of gear. I always loved going through the music that my parents
listened to and as a kid had access to a wide range of influence
of my parents. Alot of my dads gear has been passed down to
both my sister and I. I come from a musical loving family and
part of that is having music and gear to play it on. What I am
saying is that your hobby and musical interests are part of you
and part of you that your children and family may apreciate
in the future. Hows your baby going to learn to dance?

You're absolutely right. I actually have a 2-year-old daughter who loves my music room and we dance togther almost every night. And the part about passing on my music collection to my kids is also very important to me. But I don't know what else to do...something's gotta give and my music stuff is the only indulgence I have with a high degree of liquidity. I've even tried going on interviews to get a higher-paying job, but that takes time and a little luck. I do thank you for offering your perspective -

With all that stuff acquired recently, how did you ever have time to ... uh, nevermind.

You're doing the right thing, by the way, and congratulations and good luck. If money is tight, an expecting wife would be really upset (to say the least) if you kept indulging in your hobby to that extent.

Start plotting and planning to rebuild from the ashes over several years (you and your wife can take turns listening to headphones when the baby's crying, for example) ... but for now, your PX100's and X5 aren't exactly shabby.

Hang on to the vinyl and CDs if you can - sell the rest. Someday in the not so far future, you will want to introduce your kid to that music. You can always buy kit again later.

Whatever you do, congratulations! Exciting times in your home.

I don't think his wife would be very happy if he did that

From personal experience: Rip all CD's to lossless before the birth. Sell everything but keep one pair of OPEN headphones. Get a small used headphone amp. Assume you have some kind of PC/Mac already at home. You can get in a little quiet music listening time holding your baby to sleep/nap. OPEN cans because you need to be able to hear baby crying etc.

Congratulations!

Good advice - I'll first sell the gear and hold on to the actual music as long as I can. Thanks!
