Penon Audio and bzfrank are correct about the Wolfson DACS:  here are some pictures from TaoBao that show the insides of the completed 990.

Here is a picture of the LPFs:  2x AD8610:

I do recall Xuelin originally planning to use the PCM 1792 DAC, but in the end, they switched to the Wolfson DACs.  If Xuelin is consistent with anything, it is about changing out components.  It wouldn't surprise me if they come out with another version of the 990 within the next few months.  They have done this with the 960 (3 versions) and the 770C (3 versions and counting).

By the way (and I don't know anything about this vendor), a vendor on Aliexpress is selling the 990 for ~US $263 for the next day; there is also a $5 coupon and free shipping...  But I don't know the vendor, so beware....  Here is the link:  https://www.aliexpress.com/item/XUELIN-990-HiFi-Lossless-Audio-Player-Direct-Stream-Digital-ISO-Music-Player-with-2-3-Inch/32754214895.html?

Cool, but I wonder why they did't go for the better WM8741. The main thing that is a bit boring about the 990 is the amp is just AD8397, it is one of the better single chip amp solutions around, but I want to see some creativity, like a discrete buffer. Also no mention of native dsd unfortunately, will have to pass on this dap.

Just when you thought Xuelin had confused us all enough with their "elaborate" naming system, they are getting ready to release another DAP.  This is one is small, somewhat minimalist in appearance and is called the 780.  It looks like it will play hi-res files.  No real details yet, but they claim it will be released before the end of this year.  Here are a few pictures:  http://tieba.baidu.com/p/4861397143.

No information on price yet.  Xuelin typically waits til the last possible minute to announce the price.  Usually, bloggers on the Asian site guess at the prices for Xuelin DAPs for several weeks and usually guess below what Xuelin finally announces.  I would guess that the next step for Xuelin will be to announce the major components of the 780, but as we saw with the 990, these components may change without much notice.  I'll keep my eyes on this 780 and post any updates I see in this thread....

I purchased my 770c on 6/5/15 off Massdrop.  An SMSL SAP-7 (basically an e6 with better housing) is velcroed to the back of the 770c. The SAP-7's function is it's EQ which is identical to the e6 (significantly better than the muddied A1).  A FiiO 2.2" cable from dark/out to the amp (LO is On). FiiO EX1's w/ 3M E-A-R Earplugs.  I paid ~$200 for everything and the SQ is astonishing.

At one point I purchased an X5 and returned it 3-days later. The purchase wasn't justified.  In the ~18 months I've had this player it's only frozen one time.  On 3 separate occasions I dropped it on concrete from a height of ~4'.  One drop resulted in a nick in the upper-left corner.  The other two were flush, glass-faced drops; there's not a single scratch on the glass.  Like the rest of you, I love music.  I use the player ~4-5 hours daily and it still holds a phenomenal charge.

Out of thousands of dollars I've spent on sources, amps/pre-amps/receivers, cables, daps, dacs, cans/IEMS, and speakers, the $90.79 I paid for the 770c is unquestionably the best money I've spent on a piece of audio equipment.

have you rockboxed it? how many hours charge do you get? ive seen complaints levelled at the Xuelins for even less battery life than the xDuoo X3 ( I get about 7-8 out of mine).

I had it rockboxed at one point, but reverted back to 2.02. I would say I get about the same amount (7-8 hours).  The SAP-7 typically dies before the 770c, so I take that opportunity to charge them both.
My previous comment regarding my experience with the 770c is entirely anecdotal.  By no means do I feel it's any kind of metric.   If I were in a position where I needed another DAP in the same price range, I would purchase the xDuoo X3.

So, I'm confused, is there a Rockbox port 770c? If so, could someone point me in the right direction please?

Yes, there is, but the rockbox port that is available here (http://xvtx.ru/rockbox/) only works for the new 770C (DAC 8740) built prior to 6/16.  It is not for the original 770C (DAC 8718) or the new 770C built after 6/16, so make sure you have the appropriate 770C before you rockbox it....

how can I tell which DAC version I have? Mine's coming in the mail due to a trade

how can I tell which DAC version I have? Mine's coming in the mail due to a trade

Firstly, there are physical differences between the original 770C and the new 770C.  On the original 770C (DAC 8718), the ports on the top edge (HOs and usb) are not labeled, and the on/off button is circular.  On the new 770C, the ports are labeled and the on/off button is rectangular.  You can also tell by looking at the firmware version by going to System Information.  The original 770C should have a firmware version that includes "8718" in it, the new 770C should have a firmware version that includes "8740".  Again, there is not a rockbox port for the original 770C with DAC 8718.  To tell the difference between the new 770C made before 6/2016 and the one made on or after 6/16, check the back of the player near the bottom.  If the line reads:  "MSIP-REI-HHH-770" only then this is the version of the new 770C that can be rockbox'd.  But if the last line also includes a date that would indicate 06/2016, then you have the new version of the 770C that can't be rockbox'd yet...

Hello. Let me introduce myself. My name is sergey and I'm new here. I wanted to purchase the xuelin 770c but i think i missed the train to rockbox land. I was searching on ebay, gearbest and aliexpress and found there only the new model of the xuelin 770c. The model with the date on the back that doesn't support rockbox. The screen is no longer ips and i don't get the leather case. When i saw a Russian review on youtube from 9 months ago he got all of this. Anyone know where i can still find xuelin 770c with leather case that does support rockbox? I'm gladly appreciate your help.
