iFi Zen Stream: Setup, Tips, Tricks...
May 27, 2022 at 5:52 PM Post #166 of 1,569
I did not select hardware mixer volume on ZS, and on Tidal Connect I am able to adjust the volume on the iOS and Windows Tidal App. I have the Loundness set to off on Tidal "Settings", and when I select the icon that determines where I want Tidal to stream to (in my case, iPhone or Zen Stream) there is a volume slider. I used the Windows version of Tidal Connect to change the Settings, and I am not sure how to get to the Settings on the iPhone App.
Thanks for that. I can get the volume slider to show up but moving it does nothing. The output is fixed. I tried on both my PC and LGV60 phone.

Your welcome!

Do you have any other Streaming service? There no doubt issues for some especially with Tidal Connect! But the vast majority of owners seem to get it sorted out.

In fact if you look in other streamers forums you will see the same as here, occasionally Tidal connect Throws headaches, why I do not know, but I have always maintained that Tidal itself is the culprit, Hopefully @iFi audio may have some more detailed info than I do.

In the meantime here's a few more things to try...

Set the ZS in mode 1 AIO...

Open the ZS app in browser or the iFi app...

Make Tidal Connect your only service, wait for changes to finish, reboot the unit, see if that helps.

Also Please disable your Hotspot in the ZS menu, that has also given issues with TC.

If none of that works, and you don't have access to another streaming service to try. shoot me a PM...

Cheers!!
On my side, I tried,
  1. Reboot the ZS
  2. Close everything (hotspot, wi-fi, etc…) but Tidal
  3. Use the Tidal exclusive mode (3)
  4. Update my IFI firmware
  5. Return to factory settings
  6. Update my Tidal firmware
  7. Use different controllers (iPhone, iPad, Mac)
And Tidal Connect still disconnect.
Moreover, I try using Tidal with Airplay (on mode 1) and there is no disconnect at all (but SQ is not as good) so the issue is clearly with IFI / Tidal Connect integration and not on Tidal side.

I am considering to ask my dealer to replace my ZS but before doing so, I was wondering :
Is it just a commun issue that some of us are facing or it is an integration problem?

If everybody has the disconnect issue with Tidal Connect, it means that a new ZS will have the same problem but if some are using the ZS with no disconnect issues, I will ask for a replacement.

Question to everybody : Are you using ZS Tidal Connect with no disconnect?

Thanks...

I can almost Guarantee you that it is on the Tidal side, at least 80% so, I cannot tell you how many times I hear about other streamers doing the exact same thing, Cambridge, Blusound node, and others, and always with TC rarely ever Spotify or Qobuz...Take that fort what it's worth, I myself have now dropped Tidal completely.

Off you have done the reset in the first post off this thread and still having issues (20 mins) contact iFi at once.

Also leave that Hotspot off at all times, this seems to not help any TC issues at all, in fact I recommend you turn it off all together.

2nd off you can try a different power supply and 9-15v will work see if that helps

There are many tips in this thread, including DNS fix, just look at how many times I have posted this, if it worked We usually see no response Orr other posts from the person just the way it is, I have been preaching this setup procedure since after many hours of testing we put it together, won't take long and worth a shot.

Cheers!!

I try the DNS tip, a different power supply, I update the firmware (from factory settings) and I still have drop outs each 20-30m with TC… and no drop outs if I airplay Tidal (but the sound quality is not the same)!!! Regarding Qobuz, as I live in Canada (you may have note by my English😀), I do not have access. Therefore, I will raise a ticket with IFI as TC is my only ZS use (everything else, wifi, hotspot, etc… is off). Thanks a lot for your help.

Your welcome, it's good to keep track of those that my reset procedure did not work, as much as it is for those it did.

Cheers!!

Tidal disconnect Update :

As you are aware, there are 2 types of dropouts :
  1. Tidal app disconnects from ZS
  1. Tidal is freezing (but Tidal app remains connected with the ZS)
I made a second hard reset (but WITHOUT upgrading to current firmware this time) and finally, no more disconnects between Tidal and the ZS (so first problem solved). However, I still had Tidal dropouts (I have to enter ‘play’ again as Tidal stops from time to time). I still do not know if 2) is a Tidal issue or a ZS issue (Settings : wired connection, wifi / hotspot / everything off but Tidal, Tidal mode).

Then, after 2 days without loosing the ZS, i had a very bad idea : Update to current firmware (from 2.29.2). Afterwards, disconnects (problem 1) were worse than ever. So clearly, the first problem is with the IFI firmware. I reset the ZS (soft reset this time) to factory settings and did not update the firmware. No more disconnects from ZS. So if you have this problem, reset your ZS to factory settings and do not update to current firmware.

Regarding 2), I made the DNS fix as suggested (Google ‘Tidal playback issue Cambridge’ for details) and it helps a bit. I still have dropouts but a bit less (I think).
FYI the Cambridge procedure is very clear but I had to restart the ZS numerous times before the ZS took it (I just had a red light). YMMV but it was not straightforward in my case.

Hope this can help.

Thanks for posting this. I have reset my ZS to factory settings like you recommended, and so far Tidal has been solid. I was having issues with Tidal losing connection to the ZS. I also had the strange behavior where songs would skip ahead a few seconds randomly.

I’m on the default firmware (2.29.2) now in Mode 1 with all sources but Tidal turned off in the iFi app connected over WiFi. I’ll report back on whether or not the issues come back. At the moment, all is well!
