iFi ZEN DAC discussion + impression

Just pulled out a charger and plugged into Zen DAC and it brings a wider soundstage and slightly more volume/power to my HD650! Amazing stuff!
Yep, that's one of many benefits of powering ZEN DAC externally, thanks for noticing :beerchug:

It's a constant buzz on the right channel and if i touch to enclosure i can also hear coil whine. RCA connection doesn't have this problem, i only hear noise floor with RCA cable, no odd noises. If i connect both cables (RCA and 4.4 BAL), buzz noise disappear as well.

And a small update for you. It seems that the noise disappears upon connecting RCAs because they provide ground to the second product. Your 4.4mm cable should do that but it doesn't (most likely due to how its pins were soldered) and that's why it needs to be tested and possibly replaced. Hope this helps!

Yeah that's a possibility :slight_frown:

If that's of any help, we have a cable that works:

https://ifi-audio.com/products/4-4mm-to-4-4mm-cable/

Thanks!
Looks nice but super expensive for me. I don't have problem with RCA cables intact so i will keep it like this for now. RCA takes away the buzz and 4.4mm cable works as it should.:L3000:
Feedback: We want all in one product something like Topping DX5, Fiio K9/RME ADI2 (but cheaper lol)

Sure thing, if that RCA connected alongside 4.4mm does the job for you, by all means please use your stack like so :)

Roger that, though we have quite a few AIO products

I have zen dac 2 how do I update it?
What is the latest version?
What changes?

Here's a handy vid how the process looks like:

...and plese go here (https://ifi-audio.com/download-hub/), select your iFi device from the list, type in its serial number and download a desired firmware version. Thanks!

Just a quick question about "ASIO not active" on my zen dac v2. I have the up to date drivers & firmware installed, and it still shows its not active. Is there a setting I need to change, or does it matter if its not active? Just wondering if I'm missing out on any sound quality or doing something wrong.

Running 99% of music through Foobar (MP3 320kbps & FLAC files) if that helps, or if I should enable some type of setting on it to enable ASIO?

It shows ASIO as not active when you don't have it selected as the output from your player. You should be able to select it from within Foobar as your output, if I remember correctly, but it's been many years since I've used that player.

Edit: Looks like you need the ASIO plugin for foobar: https://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_out_asio

I gave up my expensive DACs and now have been happily using my Zen Sig DAC. I was using it on my Woo WA234 which I sole yesterday and came to realize other cheap DAC's like Gustard X16 suck. This little monster does it the best. I even loved Pink Floyd using Zen+Little DOT LD-Y2 300B amp and HD8XX headphones so much that needing another DAC was not nessacary.
Wells Audio Cipher lvl 1
Holo May KTE
Chord Hugo TT2
IX Audio Sagar
Denafrips Pontus 2 and Aris 2
There are others I owned but that list is good enough. Maybe is I really tore music apart those would be necessary.

Wow, that's quite the list and it's very cool that ZEN DAC does it for you enough to keep craves for other DACs away. Well, at least for now :)

I'm having a bit of trouble with my Zen Dac V2 on any firmware past 7.20. I'm having audio clicks and pops. I've had audio totally drop out once or twice and only got it back by plugging the dac out and in again. None of this happens with the 7.20 firmware. As an example I was listening to the Elden Ring soundtrack. Many of the the tracks have a second or two of silence, as soon as the silence ends and the music starts up again there is an audible pop. It sounds like the Dac is putting itself to sleep during the silence and then waking itself back up? Has anyone else seen anything like this?
