this is using exactly same setup. i only changed cable. might be the cable quality? maybe the 2.0 cable i used is crap

It's because USB 3.0 can give 900mA and usb 2.0 only 500mA.

Okay, I have had my Zen Dac for 5 months now, running strictly off USB. Dug out an unused 5-volt power adaptor and plugged in, and WOW, what a noticeable change. Improved instrument separation, clarity, and dynamics. I'm letting my Fidelio X2 slap my face to music right now and I can't quit. U2, Tears For Fears, Smithereens, Little Feat, Wolf Alice, ...it ALL sounds MUCH better. Gonna move on to the DEVA later today. Sunday - Fun Day - Music Day. Thanks iFi for such a wonderful DAC.
Explains a lot. I have been running low noise 5v external power since day 1 - I would never have noticed.

im actually running it with a power adaptor. 
Always nice when your DAC can directly enable violent face slapping.
I am hoping to see my new HE4xx show up tomorrow. Maybe I will do what you did.

Let ME tell YOU something...
The HE4xx and the Zen Stack is a simply exceptional combo. Planars are new to me... the imaging... the experience allowed me to have a new appreciation for instrumentals. I strongly recommend that if you get the opportunity, try out planars (if you haven't). The HE4xx is a steal at its price point. I also tried them out on my THX 789 stack, which was also awesome, but Xbass for the win on fun. No wonder ifi got all market happy with a freshly minted version of the Zen Can for Hifiman (I am just running a normal Zen Can with DAC v2 BTW...)
