iFi ZEN DAC discussion + impression

So I've read that the Zen Dac is compatible with the PS5 on it's latest firmware. Is that the GTO firmware? Does this just apply to the V2?

I don't know if it's just Zen DAC v2, but here's the description from the download hub for the latest GTO firmware for the v2:
  • Firmware 7.2c – GTO Filter / MQA / DSD256 (Sub-version)

Release date: June 01, 2021This download is for: macOS, Windows
All PCM LED colours will be the same colour due to GTO filter. GTO filter which upsamples USB audio. MQA, DSD256 (Windows), DSD128 (Mac), 384kHz. SPDIF output disabled (on USB to SPDIF capable units). No GTO for SPDIF signal. No DSD512. No 768kHz. Added PlayStation USB compatibility

Edit, didn't notice earlier, but even the non-GTO version added the PS USB features:
  • Firmware 7.2 – MQA / DSD256 (Cookies & Cream)

Release date: June 01, 2021This download is for: macOS, Windows
Full MQA major code optimisation. Added PlayStation USB compatibility.

I gave it a go with my Zen Dac V1 running the GTO firmware. Didn't work unfortunatly. I hope they release ps5 compatible firmware for the v1 as well.

If we can apply this to ZEN DAC V1 via a simple firmware update, we will.

I have no news on the subject, apologies :)
Hi Ifi, when will be available firmware for Ifi Zen Dac with serial number 53040xxxxx to full MQA support?
Hi @Milan79

Your serial number appears to be in the DACv1 range. The V1 DAC is only equipped to act as an MQA renderer, and not a decoder. The DACv2, (53070xxxxx) is a full decoder leveraging an updated XMOS chip.

v1 still plays MQA content.

You dont right. Zen Dac V1 from s/n 53040xxxxx have same XMOS 216 chip like Zen Dac V2.

Yes, as I recall based on previous discussions, this is accurate - I had forgotten and had to look back into history. ifi even committed to an update on firmware that will enable full MQA decode on the v1 DAC with the XMOS chip.

Looks like this one fell off the radar.

@iFi audio - this was some time ago. I think its fair that @Milan79 get an update. It was indicated that one would be provided. If you do represent ifi, then please ask on his behalf. While I am not a big promoter of MQA, I personally think it's fair that a response be provided against a previous commitment for an update. If you don't represent the correct source of information, please provide the details of whom can be reached to get the information.

@Milan79, my honest belief is that you won't see what you are looking for. ifi has been outwardly struggling with their development. They pulled the 5.x DAC v2 drivers for windows which brought native support for 384 KHZ PCM, but also had no firmware update tools. They seem more focused on creating "new" products than are competitive that supporting older models.

idk why, but using USB-B 3.0 will sound different (better) than this 2.0
Different as in better or worse?

In theory it shouldn’t matter per say - even USB 2.0 has more than enough available bandwidth to handle a single hifi DAC with ease.

This is going to sound basic, so please don’t take it as condescending - have you validated that the DAC is operating on a dedicated USB 2.0 port, meaning it isn’t sharing port bandwidth with other devices? This is a very obvious reason why performance would degrade. I have run the Zen DAC and DAC v2 on USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, and while I run the device on a USB 3.0 port daily, I did not personally experience any issues with the hardware running off of USB 2.0

Also

1) Have you updated your BIOS a for your systems motherboard?
2) have you installed the latest chipset and USB drivers (if applicable)?

Again, I don’t mean to suggest you haven’t. Your discovery seems abnormal.
