iFi micro iDSD Black-Label - In-Depth Review

One can always dream.

Sure, more or less but we're all dreamers!

On a more serious note, if a product we're discussing here ever happens, in many ways it'll be far better than what we're having right now.

Also folks, one customer at Amazon left us this:

"5.0 out of 5 stars Not just best value; best, period.

Portable hi-fi enthusiasts are often smitten by that virus that makes you think “the higher the price, the better the quality.” I own or have owned much-more expensive DAC/Amps such as the Chord Hugo (1 and 2), ALO Continental Dual Mono, Woo Audio WA8 Eclipse, among others, and none can match the sheer musicality of the Black Label. Whatever its minor flaws, this is one magical piece of gear that can make any headphone shine in my experience.

Case in point, the Argon MK3 modded T50RP headphones. I never understood what all the hoopla was about until I plugged them into the Black Label with the 3D enhancement switch turned on—a match made in audiophile heaven. Which brings me to this: Unlike sound altering functions in other devices, those in the Black Label really improve the sound of overly dark or bright headphones. These features are not there for show.

Let’s talk about power. This device has tons of it. In addition to the power-hungry Argons, the Black Label drives my Sennheiser HD650s effortlessly and beautifully, bringing out the best in these classic cans.

Whatever gear (portable or otherwise) you may be thinking of buying next, this is the one to get. "

I bought a new ifi micro dsd Black Label

When I connect the device to my computers using the usb cable there is channel cuts outs and very loud static sound. I tried different headphones, I tried different usb cables , I tried connecting it to an amp so that it becomes a dac, and always when connected to a computer there is an issue with very loud noise , crackling and weird noises. I tried connecting it to an iphone using an iphone usb cable and same thing very noisy sound. I tried connecting it an android and same thing

The only time there is no noise is when I use the BL connected with a 3.5 mm cable line in connected to a phone . The noise goes away.

This leads me to think there is something seriously wrong with the usb outlet in the BL.

any one experienced such issue, i opened a ticket lets see how fast they will handle my issue

what a bummer as i just got yesterday
I got my ifi micro black label, and similar problem with my razer, sound OK with other laptops. Ifi support says it's the laptop's problem, since it's working on other laptops... I guess razer will be saying it's ifi problem since this works well with other dac/amps.

That's a bummer. But I will say that in all of my experience iFi support has been top notch and I have heard many examples of them going above and beyond to make sure the customer is happy.

The funny thing is its only having problem when the laptop is charging. When it's not charging its fine. Also when it's not charging, I change the windows powerplan, the crackling sound comes back. I try change windows powerplan to match the unplugged powerplan, the noise is still there when plugged in. Messing with all power setting and USB power in both windows and bios doesn't work too.

Hello guys, question: When i try to play an MQA file, the LED shows yellow. When i play 16 bit file its still yellow, when on regular 24 bit files, still yellow. It only changes color when i play DSD. So im not sure if its fully rendering MQA. Im on current firmware.

You have our GTO firmware installed, which applies our GTO filter to all PCM files and that's why you see yellow LED. DSD should change LED color from yellow, so that's good, but if you're not getting MQA specific colour, this means that what your iFi device is getting isn't MQA. I'd check settings inside of a software you use to play MQA.

So how will i know if im getting MQA? I played a lot of MQA files and regular 16bit/24 bit files and all im getting is a yellow LED indicator..

Update: tried it on my pc. And yeah from tidal app the yellow indicator works for MQA. The green works for 16 bit files. Maybe my Sony zx507 is the problem. Thanks!
Yes that is the first thing you should have mentioned, your source! it seems zx507 can play MQA natively but wont pass through USB.

Mine stays yellow wether I'm playing 16 bit or MQA off Tidal, is that normal? And caught up on some of this thread....MQA not passable through USB? True? Wow that's crazy .. so only through optical?
