iFi audio's worst kept secret: the hip-dac!

@iFi audio the hip dac 2 isn't working on my lg v60 anymore after listening on my laptop.

The green lights by the volume knob are blinking. I've tried restarting my phone, unplugging and plugging the cables back in and turning the hip dac 2 off and on again

It makes sense, our xDSD is a step above and very solid at wireless playback!

If such a product will come to life, the ability to take calls would be nice, yup!

Welcome on board! :beerchug:
@iFi audio sorry if this has been asked previously, but can you confirm that both hip dac and hip dac 2 can accept headphone with built-in microphone (e.g. Gaming headphones)? So I can use it for PC gaming or zoom calls via my PC.

Also can you advise an Ifi desktop product which has similar feature as well?

Thanks in advance

I'd have to double-check, but am pretty sure that GO Blu is our only product that allows for using headphones with built-in mics. Thanks!

@iFi audio is correct here - the GO Blu is the only product from our line that would fit your requirements. The Go Blu mic is actually quite excellent!

@iFi audio @Sebastien Chiu

Just some constructive criticism about your website…
Having to enter a S/N just to check for updated firmware is a total PITA
Yeah I was thinking the same. I didn't have my glasses yesterday and had to literally risk a migraine trying to read the small letters.

Until I realized the small letters I wasn't reading wasn't the serial numbers that are actually even smaller. I was like seriously 😳

Love their dac amps, but hate searching for tiny letters

We're aware that typing in serial numbers by hand might be a touch troublesome at times, but it's done that way by design. Some of our older products which we still support routinely have firmware versions specific for them. Our firmware search engine identifies these products by serial numbers, so that our customers will see only firmware versions that apply to them. Hope this helps, thanks!

Hi @iFi audio and readers all.

I just purchased a new Hip DAC to use with Tidal lossless on my Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G (and any future phone I upgrade to). Apart from being annoyed that I selected the original model when I meant to purchase the model 2 (100% my own fault) I am happy and impressed with this little beauty (I don't use MQA anyway). It replaced my Topping NX4 DSD which had a dodgy micro-USB port (which I broke altogether trying to fix it). This was a known quality problem with that model Topping, so I wasn't about to buy their product again. I have to say the build quality on the iFi is worlds better and the sound ot puts out into my aging well Oppo PM3 headphones, is equally good, and somewhat less fatiguing as my previous DAC.

I have one problem with it, the cause of which I suspect may lie with Samsung, but all the same, I did not have this issue with the Topping. This is that when playing Audo with HD USB capture on with either the Tidal app, or USB Audio Player Pro playback pauses randomly once the screen is off. Sometimes it will do it repeatedly like after only 10 -30 seconds, but at other times I may get 30 minutes uninterrupted play until it occurs: there is no rhyme or reason to it that I can figure out.

When it happens, I have to wake the device (either pressing the power button, or double tapping my screen (I have DD2W active) and play resumes from where on the track it stopped.

I have ensured both Tidal and USB Audio Player Pro are exempt from battery optimization putting them to sleep in the background, and the apps do not actually turn off. It is simply that playback is paused until I hit the power button again, when it resumes from precisely the point in the track where it had paused at.

It should never do this, and just keep playing until I stop it.

With the Tidal app I can ignore the prompt to allow HD USB capture and it will play through the DAC anyway, but you can hear the huge loss of audio quality with the Android downsampling this does, so that defeats the purpose of having a decent DAC.

Any suggestions appreciated

I've got a love/hate relationship with my hip DAC. I bought a V1 pre-order and the USB connection is crap. It loses the connection even if I don't touch it.

I recently changed the firmware and connected to my Mac mini playing Tidal with balanced outs into my pre-amp. It worked great for a day, magenta light and all... Sounded amazing. The mini is also charging it all the time. The next day the mini didn't show it as an audio output.

It never worked consistently and I don't have the time, energy, or desire to send it in for repairs. So I quit trying and just use Apple music into my Bifrost... Never had a problem with that setup, just no mqa...

Cheers

Hi there and thanks for your post. By the looks of it this issue most likely is related to your smartphone's settings, but is there a way you could use a different cable in-between your hip-dac and smartphone? Alternately you can ask our support here: https://support.ifi-audio.com

Perhaps our tech team is already familiar with issues such as yours and will be able to help you out, thanks!

Found the answer.

On a Samsung device it is not sufficient to exempt the app from being put to sleep. In addition to adding it to the list of never sleeping apps under battery settings, you also need to go the Apps and select the individual app (So Tidal, and USB Audio Player Pro in my case) and tap on battery, then change from Optimised to unrestricted.

Both changes are needed.
