iFi audio's worst kept secret: the hip-dac!

Can anyone shed a light on what exactly is a TRRS cable for s-balanced connection?

I ve got 2 cables with my campfire audio dorado 2020 - a normal 3.5 mm one (which i assume is a TRS one) and one with an in-line mic (which theoretically is a TRRS one, since it has the extra ring dor the mic).

Is there any advantage in using either of the aforementioned cables with the 3.5mm s balanced input?

A regular 3.5mm cable is a TRS cable. Your other cable with a mic is a TRRS indeed and has its one extra R-ring for that mic. However, both these cables are regular single-ended cables. A TRRS balanced cable that doesn't feature a mic is what you need to fully exploit the best hip-dac has to offer.

Thanks for the info! I've still got 2 more questions:

1) If i'd be using a balanced TRRS cable with the DAC - will I experience more, less, or the same amount of hiss? I get very small amounts of hiss

2) I've not found a mmcx 3.5mm TRRS balanced cable yet - does anyone make one? Alternatively, could I use a regular 2.5/Pentacon balanced cable with a converter to 3.5mm TRRS (if there is such a ting) in order to get the full S-Balanced effect?

thanks!

1. Balanced circuits are more powerful, so with highly sensitive IEMs you might experience extra background noise.

2. If you use hip-dac, the best way would be to simply use its 4.4mm Pentaconn headphone out that's balanced. That is the most convenient and reliable way, and you don't have to rely on any converters :)

Lol, regarding 2) you are correct - however in my confusion, I was actually talking regarding the xDSD - I was looking for a s-balanced/TRRS clarification and somehow I posted the question here.

In any case, I DID have a hip-dac, but ended up exchanging it for an xDSD two days later - do not regret, however the price difference is by no means small, and both the hip-dac and the xDSD for their respective price-categories are to-notch - from sound, to features, to DESIGN.

I just wish so much the xDSD had the possibility to take calls/accept a headphone with a mic-input. Eh, who knows, maybe in the near future, an xDSD2 or something :)))

Until then, I'm a definite (new) iFi fan!

It makes sense, our xDSD is a step above and very solid at wireless playback!

If such a product will come to life, the ability to take calls would be nice, yup!

Welcome on board! :beerchug:

IF such a product will come to life, I'd rather you guys make one! Hell, I'd even pay a pre-order deposit and wait, even a year!

So please maybe make one, "shut up and take my money"!

Duly noted mate, thanks for your ongoing support, and do continue enjoying your xDSD!

Sure thing! I just got it, so no need to hurry with that "xDSD mark 2 with LDAC bluetooth and call handling" just yet.

Thanks for the awesome products! I dunno how i've spent 3-4 years going through audioquests, fiios and many other devices but was semi-oblivious about your products.

Found the battery life of my Hip-Dac has really dipped over the past week. Seems to be around 1hr 30min use now. I've reached out to IFi support and waiting to hear back.

I'm curious though, has anybody got experience of IFi support? Am I likely to have a struggle on my hands to get the battery replaced?

I should say, my Hip-Dac is just over 3 months old, so really surprised the battery is giving out already. Not running anything crazy either, just Audio Technica msr7b.

Great support in my opinion.
