iFi audio ZEN Stream - Streaming elevated to a higher plane

As for the Chromecast matter....really sad! It has been quite a while now and really no progress, no Volumio v3, the Android app is bad to say the least, not very stable firmware also.

Really sorry to say it but I'm really disappointed and that's why this will be the last Zen product from the company!
I agree it is sad, however our plan and desire was to provide this, unfortunately it was taken away Frim it control and out of our hands.

We are sorry to have disappointed anyone.
Same situation with me. The promise of Chromecast was a deciding factor for my original purchase. After a year & no sign of CC, I went for the Wiim Pro after all the positive reviews. I was shocked that it just worked and set up without a fuss! Not only that, but with an upgraded power supply, it matched the ZS sonically in my system!
Although the ZS didn't work out for you I am glad you found something that did. The Wiim product is very good, sonically not for me (I have issues with the optical output of the Mini) perhaps I should try the Pro with Coax

My only disappointment with the Wiim is the lack of a Computer software program vs. Having to use a phone or tablet. The development of this area has been very slow. (Wiim Home for desktop)

Thanks to you for giving your opinions.

Cheers!!

Hey Bubba

I grabbed the Pro because of its coax output so I could integrate with my setup.

My initial digital experience was with Windows +Jplay. Now gone to tablet for ease & simplicity, so Wiim suits me fine.....but I understand wont suit everyone. My gripes are lack of USB input/output so will not support HD file storage. To play my files I have to store on SD card and stream from tablet. Cant use Wiim software for this as its uselessly slow with too many keystrokes. Luckily, HiFi Cast app is fast & flawless.

Cheers!

I am posting this here and also in the main Zen Stream thread so hopefully most Zen Stream users may catch it. After months/years of following this Chromecast issue, I have what will hopefully be the final word on where this is and a bit of what happened.

First from me personally, I would like to apologize as I know this is an important feature for some. I also want to point out that from day one "Chromecast" was never included with the Zen however the front page of the Zen Stream from iFi's website did say it would be "coming" in a future firmware update.

I have known all along that in reality this issue hung up on Google's willingness to "certify" or whatever you would like to call it new platforms for Chromecast. In other words (not an excuse) we were told that it would be certified and after launch, Google began to drag its feet and stalled the certification for the Zen.

My Opinion (and mine alone as I was not working for ifi at the time) is that we should have come out strong with a statement saying this is on Google and please contact them to certify it for the Zen Stream. But we didn't in hopes that it would happen sooner than later. IMO this was a mistake and IMO only.

So now let's move on to what I have learned over the weekend in terms of the "status" of Chromecast on the Zen Stream, It's not good if you would like to stop reading here.

I am paraphrasing as there is no official iFi statement.

This will not happen for a long while, if at all, as Google won't play ball. They are not certifying any new platform (Rockchip is a new platform for them) at the moment. Anyone who wants Chromecast will have to use existing modules that are already certified. They have said not until the next version of Google Cast has come out, that they will not look into the issue further.

So there it is, I know this is not what anyone looking for Chromecast wants, but in all reality what can we do at this point other than wait?

I have been informed that there is a workaround like TuneBlade that allows Chromecast To use Airplay to stream to the Zen, but I am sure that albeit a workaround again not ideal.

Again, shoot the messenger if you will, but I have always tried to give accurate info both before I worked for iFi, and now that I do. I think you guys deserve the truth and answers, no matter how slow they may be.

Cheers!!

Bubba
I don' get this really I don't,other companys had no problems getting google to certify there devices, even smaller companys like the wiim mini/pro to name 2,whats going on at ifi thats making google not want to deal with you? I feel were only getting told half the story here,no chromecast, app is absolutey a embarrassment,no volumio 3.0,im stuck with this device as no one will buy it cause all the issues are public knowledge,I think we should teach ifi a lesson and sue the crap out of them

Good point Hash!

I bought my ZS on the pretext that Chromecast was coming soon. The advertising misled me:

Now, we can see the advertising has changed:

With all the connections & operating issues I have had, I have also stated no one will buy it off me second hand, and we are left with an expensive paperweight. I wonder if we are legally entitled to compensation?

I agree, it is not a 20 euro device, and no chromecast, only supporting half the streaming services sucks big time. Missing Deezer, missing Qobuz no decent support of SMB (more than one situation where SMB shares don't work).

A while back, I posted about the problems I was having with Roon and the ZS. I thought I had resolved the issue.

However, I've since re-purposed the ZS to my main headphone rig (ZS>Hugo TT2>GS-X mini>Susvara). Previously, it was driving my main speaker system. Needless to say, the headphone rig is way more resolving. I now notice very brief glitches. It happens 2-3 times/hour. Very annoying!

I'm posting again hoping that @iFi audio and @Mr BubbaHyde will continue to work with Roon for a better solution.

Much appreciated!

They only way I got this kind of issues fixed was a full reset, and reinstall/configure. It is crazy yes. When it works, it works really nice, but when it doesn't it is not worth they money they ask for. I have my share with issues too. SMB shares still not working, music database corrupt etc... and in the mean time they come with a new neo stream? maybe they could have put some time in the the zen stream. But I think they will come with a new zen stream 2 device, which runs different software and have none of the issues. My educated guess is, if they could have fixed the issues, they would have done already by now.

M8 I wouldn't buy a sink plug from this company, they can't design nothing right, google probably wouldn't certify there devices because they know they would **** it up and give chromecast a bad name, does the app work for everyone? It s fine once it setup big iff,but after a reset and I launch the app it shows the zen stream and the neo, when I select the zen it crashes everytime

Absolutely we will, Roon is a great partner to our equipment and this is an annoying issue for some and not for others, so it is tough to narrow down, but I know they are working towards a solution.

As a Roon user myself I have found a few tricks that have helped and passed them on myself as well.

May I ask is there a network switch between your Router/Modem and the Zen?

Cheers!!

Are you referring to the "Hotspot" setup method? If so I would look into the Zen Stream Tips and Tricks thread, read thru the first post, and do the wired setup method listed there to see if it resolves your issue.

Cheers!!

So Sorry you feel that way, may I ask what your support ticket resulted in? Has the unit gone back to us at all to be looked at? Let me know perhaps I can assist further.

Cheers!!

I've been using Roon with the ZS without any issues for over a year now. I'm not an expert and don't want to play down any issues others may be facing, but how can you ascertain that a few glitches are not caused by the local network? Does it happen with Roon only? Again, I don't want to be offensive, just asking.

Apparently we're going through another thread of angry posts against the ZS and Ifi. I'm one of those who have never had any problem with the ZS (it was bricked once but ifi solved the problem quickly) and still like it. I don't know if I'm a lucky guy or part of the vast majority of users. Whatever the case, I think the main "problem"of this device is how easy it is to do something wrong, that affects the operation. To cut it short, it's not a real plug and play device, like the Node or the Wim (just to name a couple of well known products). It's a bit finnicky. I never had any trouble making it work but my advice to Ifi would be "next time, do something that doesn't require playing around with settings, such as having to reselect SPDIF (ou USB) each time you power cycle the device, or not being able to change settings if you're not in AIO mode". These are just two examples that make the ZS look like a work-in-progress kind of gear. Streamers have come of age now and there's a lot of options of the market. So, it's natural that people choose easier to use and more consistent products. As far as I'm concerned, I'll keep using it until it breaks. It sounds great and works like a charm with Roon. Cheers and peace everyone.

Yes, unfortunately I don't have an open port on my router. I just changed switches from a Netgear SG-10D-8 to Netgear MS-510TXM. I'll post back here if it made a difference.
