iFi audio ZEN Stream - Streaming elevated to a higher plane
Sep 30, 2022 at 5:53 PM Post #4,771 of 5,865
Just picked up a zen stream and trying to figure out how to use Qobuz using MConnect and the DLNA mode on the stream. Hard to find a set of instructions on how to do this. In DLNA mode is there still a Wi-Fi connection or is that disabled?
If your initial setup of the ZS is complete put the ZS into Mode #1 AIO and open the Stream-iFi app or on your browser ifi.local

From there make sure you have your appropriate output correctly selected under the General Playback settings...

Once that is done, open Mconnect and verify that the ZS is a valid source by selecting "Play to" if I remember correctly, if it is and it works that way, you should be set up properly to switch to the exclusive mode you are looking to use.

Cheers!!

All of that is complete, but a little confused on your last step. When I open M connect and choose play to all I see is an iPhone/Airplay option. Under that section I see the Zen but that would imply I am connected via airplay. Very confused.

The way I remember it all I did was select the ZS as a separate option, as at that time it showed all my streamers.

Give me a few moments to look at the app again, as I did this usually in AIO mode. It might take me a bit, lol, sorry

Cheers!!

When I open Mconnect on my M1 Mac these are the options I see currently...

I am using a wired connection, but my wireless option in the Stream-iFi app is also on, I leave it that way because I move the ZS sometimes. Do you have the wireless on as well, and again this is in AIO Mode#1

Cheers!!

AIO mode yes. I do not see the device under UPNP so that must be the problem. Wonder why it’s not showing up?

If it's not showing up chances are it's just a missed setting, so first things first,...

I know this is a pain in the butt, however, I would recommend going here and making sure your initial setup was correct and in order...

Also, your LED is probably showing green because inside the Qobuz menu of Mconnect you need to adjust the playback settings to play the higher rez files, up to 24/192 I believe it was 3 lines on the Qobuz page in the Mconnect app to get to these settings. Ill post a quick pic from my phone if possible.

I wish you luck and if you're not good, or someone else doesn't help you out I'll be around tomorrow, Don't hesitate to do my setup as it has solved many issues simply because of a missed step, or wrong anything.

Cheers!!

So far my experience with the ZS is crapy at best. Really bad instructions and nothing seems to work as it should. Might be going back to my Node at this point and sending this back.

Can someone tell me why my ZS is not showing up in MConnect under UPNP? Does it have to be direct connected to the Ethernet port for UPNP to work? I am using it via Wi-Fi so I hope that’s not the problem.
I checked the setting on the ZS and UPNP is enabled. Also still not sure why everything I play illuminates green on the face of the unit. I play 24/192 and still green. Maybe I have a faulty unit.

Too bad about the UPnP issues. I have used MConnect to successfully stream Qobuz to the ZS via the approach outlined above. (I am using a wired connection.) My ZS is clearly listed as a UPnP device by MConnect. If yours is not, you might be able to use another program to verify that the ZS UPnP service is active on your local network. On a Mac, a "UPnP Analyzer" app is available free from the App store. When I run this, I see the ZS listed as an active renderer (see screenshot). If you don't see yours and you have the UPnP renderer turned on in your ZS set-up, it may indicate either an issue with your ZS (to refer to iFi support), or something on your local network that is blocking UPnP. To see if Wi-Fi is the issue, is it possible to connect the ZS to ethernet (e.g. to a port on you your router) to see if that makes a difference? I have had issues using the ZS over wifi, but it has been solid as a wired device.

It just started working and I changed nothing. Now I need to figure out why the led on the front panel never changes from green even on higher res tracks on Qobuz.
Changes are not instant you have to give the ZS time to reset itself when you make changes. The default setting for your Qobuz account is 16/44 on any new device. Like Bubba said go into the settings menu in both mConnect and the Qobuz desktop app and make sure it's set to 24/192 in both places. The desktop settings control your overall account and the mConnect settings control the unit it's playing too.

I have to admit I finally gave up on the Zen Stream and MConnect. I had the same problems as you when I first connected, then suddenly it seemed to work. I used MConnect for many months but would get a drop out during ever single album and had to re start the Stream, after clearing the playlist and unplugging wires etc. I think it is an MConnect issue but I don’t know for sure and some people do find it works ok.

i now happily use Airplay. Maybe there’s a difference in quality on hi res albums but I bet I couldn’t blind test a difference.

I hadn't had Mconnect used in the #5 mode for quite a while and noticed that it took almost 90 seconds for it to populate the UPNP sources when I did use it for this test.

Other than that when I did use it for testing for folks it worked for me with no issues, that I can remember. I often recommended it as an alternative especially for Qobuz where it was very good.

Cheers!!

I assume with now using Airplay you were using Mac at the time of the dropouts. Do you happen to remember if it seemed more of an occurrence during Hi Rez tracks or just overall?

Cheers!!
