iFi audio ZEN Stream - Streaming elevated to a higher plane

Actually they just appeared to have released a beta firmware that addresses MQA—it’s version 2.30.1.

When you say "that address MQA" can you confirm exactly what iFi have said it addresses?

In a later post you wrote:

They released a beta addressing the MQA debacle (which was an issue with MQA’s draconian and predatory licensing practices rather than any deviousness on ifi’s part) within a few days of this pile-on—I just installed it and it works.

I assume your comment "it works" means the beta version now does the 1st unfold?

But then in a later post you wrote:
Yes mine is not working either yet

I get Native DSD 256 throughout via Roon upscaling with the ZS currently and I can play 256 FLAC files. Haven’t tried it with DOP.

Actually they just appeared to have released a beta firmware that addresses MQA—it’s version 2.30.1. It’s available via logging into iFi.local/dev which accesses the developer GUI; then just enable beta firmware upgrades by toggling it on. Then go back to iFi.local and check for updates. I’m testing it now.
@srkbear: were I can download latest firmware including beta releases? I can't find any such info on ifi web page?

Could not find how to upgrade Zen Stream firmware (beta).
I did connect to iFi's wifi network (192.168.211.1/dev/) and approved beta. When I return and checked for updates it hangs and does not direct me to the latest beta firmware.

I use android phone connected via wifi. Current ZS version is 2.29.x.

Please direct me to the full instructions on how to upgrade firmware (OTA, and via USB).

Thanks

Edit: managed to install latest beta version
Thanks

Folks, an update from us!

As you now know, the ZEN Stream was always meant to be a Bit-Perfect machine, a passthrough device as transparent as possible with the best possible sound. Also, being a passthrough device meant all MQA data will be passed through the ZEN Stream transparently.

Due to a bug in the ZEN Stream, it performed the 1st unfold of MQA. In fact, it forced this whether you wanted it or not.

For example, if you are already using a full MQA decoder, eg Pro iDSD, you may not want the ZEN Stream to perform an unfold at all. With the previous firmware, you had no choice but to receive an unfolded signal from the ZEN Stream.

We removed this bug with the latest firmware update (and updated the Tidal library to the latest version) BUT we have seen and heard your concerns about us removing this functionality.

So, as you now know, we are working closely with MQA to add this function back into the ZEN Stream.

And we are going to go one step further by adding a dedicated setting to the ZEN Stream to give you the freedom to choose whether the ZEN Stream performs the first unfold or not. You will be able to choose between Auto, On or Off.

If you enable the BETA in the ZEN Stream, you should be able to access and test this functionality. We would love to hear your feedback.

We are terribly sorry for the confusion and inconvenience caused in the past few weeks. This bug should not have been present from the start. A big thank you to you and the community for supporting us, providing valuable feedback, and helping us to straighten this out.

That's great news, thank you, especially with the configuration options :)
I hope to have a chance of trying this out some time this week.
Presumably I would still be able to revert to the latest general firmware release by doing a reset followed by normal firmware upgrade check, if I should need to?

thanks!

I believe that is the case, simply by turning 'BETA' off.

For those interested in the Beta firmware...

in your browser go to ifi.local/dev you should see this page...

Screen Shot 2021-12-13 at 12.29.40 PM.png

Click on "Enable" under Beta update...

Then go back to your normal ifi.local page in your browser and try to update the firmware.
