iFi audio ZEN Stream - Streaming elevated to a higher plane

Though I know MQA is controversial I liked the Radio Paradise MQA project.
Unfortunately they are providing that exclusively for Bluesound Node.
BTW I got the Bluesound N130 a 2nd time as I didn't want to believe it sounds worse to my ears as I liked its massive functionality but I ended up once again returning it in favour of the Zen Stream.
With the newly discovered Audirvana UPNP feature with transparent MQA forwarding, superior upsampling and the for my ears nicer tuning with sub bass punch and less striking upper mids it's now my primary desktop source.

Hi guys,

I just ordered an iFi Zen Stream and have a noob question: can it be used with a Nuprime uDSD dac?

The Nuprime receives power over USB from the connected source, so I'm not sure whether - particularly given the power issues with the Stream I've read about on this thread - it would be suitable to add another 'load' to the Zen Stream.

I will not be using the headphone output of the Nuprime, which, at present, is connected to a PC as the streaming source.

I do intend to acquire a more suitable dac in the near future, but I'm wondering whether the above combination will work until such time.

Just wanted to confirm that the update worked like a charm after a reset to factory settings. It only took a couple of minutes and everything was up an running. Had to add the wi-fi settings, that's all. Used the browser app on my PC to get it done.

Awesomesauce!

I noticed yesterday that there was a Zen Stream iPhone app that allegedly claimed to be the “official” GUI for the unit, but I didn’t recognize the developer. Alas today, it has mysteriously vanished from the App Store.

Any word on whether iFi plans on releasing such an audio player app to complement their streamer, similar to existing offerings from Fiio, Roon, Audirvana, DTS, HiBy, Shanling, Onkyo, Radsone, EarStudio, Denon, Sony, Lotoo, Astell&Kern et al? Seems like it would be a competitive option for this new entry into the streaming market (nudge nudge)…🙏

I'll have to check but that is the app I believe we all downloaded, basically the same thing as ifi.local in a browser just more responsive and a little easier..To me anyway

Yepper, that's the right one called Stream-iFi, not sure why it is not on the App store anymore, perhaps @Sebastien Chiu can let us know.

I still have it on my phone and it is functional.

Hope that helps!

Thanks! I still have it too—but it’s oddly buggy for an official app. Has misspellings, like “Steam-iFI” on the initial splash screen. I was concerned it was a third-party app under cover of a licensed iFi product…it got pulled awfully fast…

My iStream arrives tomorrow, so I’ll give it a try.

Hey guys, that indeed is our app and not a 3rd party app. You can't find it on the app store anymore because we pulled it temporarily off until we fine-tune it.

How stable is this streamer? I played Paradise FLAC for over 5 hours straight today and not once it paused or stuttered. Never managed more than 15 minutes with Roon off my PC. Same story with Qobuz and local files. Rock solid!

Indeed! I've had it going for 48 hours and playing for nearly 12 hours straight at a time and no issues.

Roon is extremely sensitive to network dropouts. I had to upgrade my network switch, powerline adapters and wifi routers completely to fix it's behaviour. Now I can play radio via Roon all day long (at least usually). Compared to Roon, Volumio (and all streamers on this software base) play radio very reliably even on lesser networks.

Truth! Glad it's handling things well for you.

I have a uDSD and just hooked it up to my ZS. I have the coax output from the uDSD running to my regular DAC, and was able to play both from my local music files and via Spotify Connect. Note that I had to restart the ZS once with the uDSD connected, but after that it seems to work fine.

Thanks for this skrzyp.
Will put it to the test as soon as the ZS arrives.

I've used the ZS as an excuse to try Roon. I've had no dropouts, it has worked perfectly. I switched the ZS to setting 2 for Roon only mode. Everything is on wifi, including the server. Roon also works in my environment where I am always connected to a VPN. Some networked apps don't like that.

A few question, if I may, hopefully not answered already. I did search...

I currently have a USBridge (non-Sig) with Volumio (wth Virtuoso subscription) . I do not use Roon, and avoid MQA. I do play DSD files, up to 512. In addition to a NAS, I stream via Tidal....though I'm contemplating changing to QoBuz. In addition, 2 features of the USBridge I use (or plan to use) are the ability to to connect a USB CD-ROM drive and play CDs, and the Digital Room Correction plugin.

Questions:

I understand that the Stream OS is based on Volumio...

Is there/will there be QoBuz integration, similar to what Volumio currently offers? (Plainly there will NOT be an exclusive mode...)

Will the DRC plugin be supported?

Will the ability to play a CD from a USB CD-ROM drive be supported...and will it require any sort of subscription to use, as it does with Volumio?

Many thanx in advance...

What about an Android app?

Have you done a full power off/on after the attempt?

That may be the issue in itself, however if you look some posts back, not too far Some other members have had success updating by using the factory reset procedure, and then updating. I have found that it is always best to set the unit up wired first, then enable wifi from within the app.

Please check your power supply first and make sure you don't have a 9 volt PS if so I would not do the factory reset as there have been some issues with that.

Made the same experience, my ZS has updated itself too whereas manual attempt was stuck before
