iFi audio xDSD- The Official Thread

I’m guessing this may be in the thread but thought I would ask. I just got my xDSD dac and can not figure out how to get sound from the Bluetooth setting. I get sound from USB but when I switch it to Bluetooth (by switching it off and then holding the knob until it is blue) I get no sound. Using same headphones In both modes. Any suggestions? Probably a step I am missing in the process.

Make sure that your phone's volume control is maxed out. Also please try to unpair and connect wirelessly again.

So strange... I got the Bluetooth to work on my iPad but not my iPhone. I’ve tried “forgetting” the device and resetting the Bluetooth.
It was one of the biggest annoyances for my review IMO. Stops the xDSD from being a must have device.

It’s incredible how after so many years Bluetooth is still unreliable, and it’s not fault of iFi, most (if not all) Bluetooth devices have compatibility problems of some sort.
Um - no. The implementation is something under the direct control of iFi. The FiiO Q5 works first time and all the time.

Sure but I swear it worked with my phone when I got it. So strange.
Mine did too. If you persevere - you’ll probably get it to work again. Try turning everything off (phone and xDSD) and start from scratch. Worst part is the inconsistency. Surprised that no-one else but myself and Currawong have mentioned it so far in their reviews actually

It will sure be mentioned in my review (when I can get some free time to polish it up...soon).

@audio duck
A remedy I found, and I may as well say it here and not save it for my review, is simply forgetting iFi Audio on the smart device and (if applicable) set to rediscover mode , then hold the xDSD's settings button (force re-pair). Everything will pair up and work again... until you switch from Bluetooth to wired and back again.

I’m pretty sure someone somewhere has issues with the Q5 Bluetooth. Like https://www.head-fi.org/threads/fii...-module-with-x7.772186/page-105#post-14122988 of course there are some devices that are more problematic.
The difference is that issue appears to be device related (ie could be an outlier). Q5 has been around long enough now that if there was an issue, it would be a dominant topic.

With the xDSD we now have at least 4 people (from a relatively small pool of early reviewers) with the same issue. Let’s hope iFi manage to find the fix soon.

Mine definitely has the same issue and from what I gathered trying to get it fixed this is a common issue with the xdsd.
Luckily I use wired mode almost exclusively

The Bluetooth bags mentioned in our early reviews as well. Maybe my review was a bit boring and not read but was there as well:

  1. It needs repair every time you change from Bluetooth to wired mode. It needs a firmware update at some point to iron the Bluetooth bags. But is not so bad the other devices from other brands have bags as well.
As I remember, the guys before me already mention very explicitly the bt bug and also was mentioned in that thread in the past, I was not feeling that I was mentioning anything new.

But I believe that a firmware update will solve some of these issues and hopefully add some extra features. The sound from xDSD is majestic but the functionalities can be definitely improved.

I have only one consideration. If they need a more modern DAC in order to add some software functionalities that i see in other products then maybe I do not want them here at all. I do not feel I am ready to be separated from this Burr Brown chip yet. But I have no technical knowledge to answer that question. ifi obviously knows better.

I think their continued pursuit of the Burr Brown chips is spot on. The sonic quality of the device is brilliant. My iDSD is Burr Brown to, and I wouldn't trade it - even for something more expensive.

The xDSD, like the Q5 and other devices, will use a commercial Bluetooth chipset. Possibly the firmware of that chipset needs an update (if there is an update available) though how readily possible that is with the xDSD I don't know. At worst, it would be that only later xDSDs have better firmware, and they'd have to swap your unit for the fix.

Has anyone tried using opt/coax to connect to a FiiO X5/X3 II to use as a dac/amp? Don't really want to buy a new touchscreen dap, and the xDSD checks all my requirements for a portable dac/amp (balanced out, digital in, good sq and power, can work with multiple devices)
