iFi audio Pro iDSD (Official) - NEW Firmware - MQA and more.

is the nope on Roon meaning in the short term, or nope as in not in this lifetime?

'Nope' stands for 'nope'. Maybe Roon will happen one day, maybe it won't, It's really difficult to predict what happens in the future. If we'll have any nfo on the subject, we will share it here, no worries.

Pro iDSD & MQA
Some of the best things in life are worth waiting for...

1.png

The Pro iDSD firmware version 2.01 ‘Chilli con Carne’ is a ground-up complete re-write which totally replaced large chunks of XMOS code with all-new in-house developed new one, to reduce resource usage without losing functionality.

2.gif

We wanted the best features for the Pro iDSD, including the full MQA decoder.

To make room for the full MQA decoder, the entire audio subsystem was streamlined, optimised and pared down in resource use WITHOUT affecting functionality. The MQA team also worked to maximise the efficiency of their code with hand-written assembler optimisations.

That also meant redoing USB Audio, S/PDIF Audio and I2S Audio (for Wifi Module).

The full source code package for the iDSD Pro is around 75 million characters. The Encyclopedia Britannica is ‘only’ 43million so just over half as ‘thin.’

In addition to the code re-work realized from earlier releases, there was also room for improved usability (hey, Pro iDSD is a very complex product after all), so we stepped up the testing which led to increased time between iterations. As you modify the firmware > you debug > you do limited testing (usually a few rounds in the loop) > you go to formal testing > you list the bugs and go back to the beginning. You get the gist.

It took us as long as it took because we want the product to be the best it can be. Nonetheless, we appreciate everyone’s patience!

The result? Version 2.01 (to our ears) sounds amazing.

Here's the link to the 2.01 FW for our Pro iDSD, enjoy!

I also said NOPE... to iDSD Pro! Over promise and under deliver. I decided to get a Chord TT2. Received it 2 weeks ago. Fully Roon Ready. No MQA, but I don’t miss it. I still get the first MQA unfold via Roon, when I need it. Everyone should consider your options for your DAC solution. If TT2 is out of your range, look at the Qutest or Hugo 2.

Sorry for the “commercial”, but I see the frustration in a lot of posters here. Good luck, everyone!

TT2 is not Roon Ready.

People are confused by Roon Ready and Roon Tested...

The giveaway is TT2 doesn’t have a network input...

It is Roon Tested though and you get the nice image in Roon signal path. Apart from that, Pro iDSD plays just as nice with Roon via USB as TT2...

Roon Ready via network input is what is being asked for here....

In ifi's defense. They never made any claim on Roon. They said Apple Airplay and DLNA. That's it. MQA was delayed but finally delivered.

If you want to have all the network options and don't want to spend an arm and leg, get a SMS200 or microRendu. They both support DLNA, RoonReady, HQPlayer NAA, Squeezelite, etc. You can use Roon as frontend, HQ Player as player and upsample like crazy. Some would argue, this setup could rival the upsampling done by a Hugo TT2 with HMS combo. I'm currently using ultraRendu -> Pro iDSD.

Yes, I do wish Pro iDSD took another step and implemented all the popular network endpoints. I'd even pay extra for an upgrade like that for sure.

I've tried this upgrade on my IDSD Pro and received the message FIRMWARE UPGRADE FAILED. Tried the upgrade two more times after rebooting my iMAC but not working. Did create a ticket with your support. In the mean time the iDSD Pro is bricked. Did swap in my Teac UD-501 and the rest of the iFi stack works OK, just not with the IDSD Pro now.

You have a Windows machine to try? I updated fine on Window 10.

Looks good streaming to Pro iDSD via Roon (Tidal) -> ultraRendu -> USB to Pro iDSD.

I am sorry I have a naive question about the clock-in/sync function of the Pro iDSD. What is the difference between the following 4 options? What should I choose if I using Grimm Audio CC2?
- Atmoic
- DARS
- 10MHz
- Standalone

Moreover, is the clock-in/sync function corresponding to all digital inputs of the Pro iDSD?

With the newest firmware, if you are playing a MQA file, it will overwrite all filters even DSD Remasters. To my surprise, MQA does sound better. I have few MQA albums which I have been playing before without MQA now with full decoding, the improvements are pretty obvious. Most noticeably, better layering and separation.

MQA certification requires MQA stream to be unaltered, thus not subject to any filters.

I also said NOPE... to iDSD Pro!

...which is perfectly fine :L3000:

Over promise and under deliver.

Can you please be more specific about what we promised but didn't deliver?

I've tried this upgrade on my IDSD Pro and received the message FIRMWARE UPGRADE FAILED. Tried the upgrade two more times after rebooting my iMAC but not working. Did create a ticket with your support.

Our team will get back to you shortly.

If you are using OSX 10.14 Mojave, connect the dac directly to the computer by USB and after running the iFi binary go to Security and Privacy / General tab and force open the firmware updater. You can also run the Windows version of the updater on a virtual machine. Other solution is to create a new admin user, login with that user and try the update on OSX, sometimes Mac OSX gives problems overtime with user file system become corrupted and the user library could be the one to blame on OSXwith config files being damaged, If it Works creating a new Admin user and updating the firmware then you are good. Greating a new user is like having a new install. If the problem occours again, it could be another app, but this complicates things.

I hope I helped, Best regards,
