iFi audio NEO iDSD - The Performance Edition is here! (INFO: Post 837, Page 56)

There is none.

The Neo iDSD uses a digitally controlled analogue stepped attenuator. This is essentially a precision trimmed resistor ladder that has no channel imbalance and can be turned down to far lower levels than any traditional volume pot - hence no need of a gain control.

The only wonder here is that it took iFi so long to use one.
You are not wrong pal.

Just tested this on my NEO with my Focal Clear Pro (55 ohms) and it works at extremely low volumes beautifully

Anyone know if the NEO iDSD has the option to change gain for the headphone output?

It doesn't have it.

I'm pretty new to this hobby so when I give impressions with the Neo and my Focal Clear Pro....you gotta take it with a grain of salt, heh

Every feedback counts and is meaningful so thanks for yours. Plus, everyone started somewhere :)

Well...so far so good. The real test comes when I get my balanced 4.4mm cable next week. We shall see my friend 🤷‍♂️

It's a balanced design, so... :sunglasses:

Strap your seatbelt please :D

I can confirm that NEO iDSD features digitally controlled chip with analogue ladder array inside, so volume attenutation itself is analogue. We did this in our X range for the first time :)

@iFi audio can you make something to compete under $1000 against Liquid gold x, Yulong Aquila II, Fiio K7\K9 etc. Basically an all in one with XLR/4.4 etc using burr browns? I want a tidy desk but I want it to be good. :)

Will we see an accompanying iCan Neo in a few months?

Honestly I'd love to see this compared to the iDSD BL.

Specs are really good. But the looks....hmmm. Maybe it looks better in real life. No XLR output is strange, hence the XLR inputs.
I was hoping for an Schiit Loki competitor.

What do you mean? It has XLR&RCA output.

I'm seeing something weird on the PCB shots. Only ONE burr brown dac chip is being used in the NEO?

Interesting. Does that make the DAC part not "really" balanced? And perhaps only the amp part is...
I would be really surprized if that was the case. Such shenanigans would get debunked really quickly in this day and age.

The chip has multiple channels, so it is likely still balanced. However for the multibit marketing to ring true more than one needs to be used? The iDSD BL uses two of these chips in parallel. I was really hoping it'd be very similar to an iDSD BL in desktop form factor with nicer amp section - but with just one chip this is different. I believe the xDSD just used one chip as well. The Multibit marketing is still there though?
