iFi audio NEO iDSD - The Performance Edition is here! (INFO: Post 837, Page 56)

I have started using my NEO as a preamp as well as DAC. (setting variable output). I just had an issue where the setting was not remembered on power up. (I usually leave it on, but lost power to the house). Luckily I was quick on the trigger and didn't blow me speakers at full volume.

Is there a way to save the setting of variable output?

I do have the latest firmware installed.

The settings is saved for my unit so it starts at variable settings every time I turn the unit on (I turn it off at end of each day)

The only time it surprised me was after the firmware update, it had turned to fixed by default

These settings should be remmebered by your NEO iDSD. If that volume incident happens again, please let us know.

With the old firmware the display now is also not equally bright, but less than with the new firmware.
I believe that before updating my display was normal...
Hi there! I think you have screen burn in - I know you already sent your unit out, but this is to help anyone else who might have had this.

I don't think the firmware update did this. You likely left it at -58 volume, USB input, for a while and that's why it looks fine. In your second picture, in the "M" for Mute, you can actually see the "-" part of "-58".

i.e. with the new firmware, if you took a picture at -58, USB input, PCM, 44 kHz, it would also *likely* look perfectly fine.

This exact same thing happened to me. I left mine at -32 for a long time. So -32, USB, 44 kHz looks perfect, but if I change the volume to anything else, or run a different sample rate, or change inputs, the uneven display lighting happens.

I love ifi. I have a whole boatload of their products and *ahem* sold a few units by recommending them to my friends.

But this whole screen burn in thing is a bummer. I wish they used a different screen, or have the screen just turn off automatically (as the default)...or something. I know I could have sent it away for repair, but I just decided to sort of live with it.

Lovely sounding piece though!

There was always the option to turn off the display, but maybe they could have posted a warning in the manual in regards to the OLED screen burning in. At the moment the manual only states that the screen is OLED and if you are familiar with the issues this type of display has, you know that burn in is one of them, but if you are not, well.. you just get to see the effect after a while.

Well, I often change the volume and when not playing music I put it off. So the possible burning in is not due to extreme circumstances...

Yep. I 100% believe that you did nothing wrong, or extreme in the slightest. It seems like a lot of people, like you and I, have this issue. I hope when your new unit gets back that everything works well and with the new firmware the auto-dimming helps the longevity of your screen :)

I have had the problem since I owned the unit but really typically used the NEO as just a DAC. I had never powered off the NEO properly. Always just lost power (its powered USB from Raspberry Pi4). So I powered off the unit properly and it seemed to save the volume setting. I tested just dropping the USB power after doing a normal power off and the volume setting saved.

So it looks good now.

That's good to know that it's okay now, thank you for the update :)

@iFi audio If possible, could you please let me know the following?

1. Are there any plans of releasing the NEO in black this year?
2. Will all NEO units (old and new ones) perform just the same once both are using the last firmware?
3. Do old units cut off the the signal from pre-outs once headphones are plugged in in the new firmware, or this just happens with newer units?
4. How can I identify "Performance Edition" models?

Thank you

1. No, the Neo will only be produced in silver.
2/3. This answer depends on your firmware. They perform the same once you have the matching firmware.
4. By the accessories included in the package. Performance editions come with additional accessories, the standard edition does not.

Thanks! Considering the Performance Edition has a new XMOS chip, does the MQA implementation change in any form? Does it offer gapless playback as well?

Performance edition does not come with a new xmos chip, it was already discussed a few pages back on this thread. From the HW point of view, old and new editions are identical, so the playback options are the same.
