iFi audio iSilencer+ and iDefender+

@iFi audio

I bought an iDefender + to solve a ground loop problem from a Dell AIO and a DAC and Amplifier both powered from the mains, my chain is as follows:

PC -> USB-C to USB-B Cable -> Aune S8 DAC -> RCA connections -> Aune S7 Pro -> Headphones

If I insert the iDefender+ in the chain between the PC port and the USB-C cable without using any additional 5V power adapter supply to the iDefender+ the Ground Loop problem is not solved, if instead I insert an additional power supply, white light turn one and the Gound loop is broken correctly.

The question is why to get the result I am forced to use the additional 5V power adapter supply to the iDefender+ considering that the DAC and Amplifier are both mains powered? in this case it shouldn't be necessary and I should get the result anyway.

Thank you

Hopefully, the existing users could help here?

I am having an issue with the USB from my PC to DAC where I am hearing tick noise every few seconds and was wondering Ifi isilencer would help to eliminate this problem?

Currently PC --> USB A --> USB B --> Topping D70s --> XLR to Cayin IHA6 and RCA to Phonitor.

I don't have an issue with another DAC coming out of the same PC though...

Thanks.

i think i have fixed the issue... I had my amp stacked on top of DAC but now i have moved amp to the side of the DAC and no more Tick sound coming out... will test a bit.. thanks

Awesome that you've managed to handle the issue and thanks for letting us know :)

@iFi audio I have an iDefender+ taking a USB signal from a gaming PC to a USB-powered USB-to-SPDIF converter. If I add an external clean 5V/1A to the iDefender+ (from a linear power supply), would this be effectively isolating the USB-to-SPDIF converter (and components further downstream, such as my DAC) from all noise from the gaming PC? Would this be "galvanic isolation"?

A clean external 5V feed for iDefender+ is the way to go to limit any noise incoming from your PC, but it's not galvanic isolation. For that you'd have to use our now discontinued iGalvanic3.0 and no other USB product we make will do what this one does. Hope this helps, thanks!

Thanks but how does a clean external 5V feed compare to galvanic isolation? I.e. what does galvanic isolation offer over what the iDefender+ w/ clean external feed does? I am just confused because if iDefender+ is replacing the USB power entirely, there would be no noise from the PC, which seems similar to what galvanic isolation would offer.

Would there be a benefit to galvanic isolation in addition to the iDefender+, or would adding e.g. an iGalvanic make the iDefender+ with its external power redundant in the chain?

The sole purpose of galvanic isolation in case of USB is to pass data between galvanically isolated circuits without any DC connection, be it from the USB itself or external PSU. The tricky part is that USB needs DC to work, while iGalvanic3.0 was designed specifically so that USB can work without it. Here iPower and iDefender+ create their own external DC for USB, but it's still present.

Considering all this, iGalvanic3.0 would do more than iDefender+ with iPower. Hope this helps, thanks!

I have a xDSD Gryphon, will iD+ and iS+ helps?
Alhough gryphon has battery but I have input connected to desktop, and power connected to wall plug (both all the time)

Maybe:
iD+ between gryphon and wall plug.
iS+ between gryphon and desktop.
(Gryphon has 2 type-C ports for separating power and signal)

Or maybe, gryphon internally already isolates them, so the iD+ is redundant.

xDSD Gryphon was designed to rely on its battery exclusively, but it all depends on how noisy your transport is. You might want to try iDefender, just so xDSD Gryphon gets a cleaner USB signal. Hope this helps, thanks!

Wait a sec, iD+ between gryphon and desktop/dap?
Don't the iSilencer also cleans USB signal? Hahaha

iDefender provides clean external 5V for USB and prevents ground loops. iSilencer reduces noise. Hope this helps, thanks!

@iFi audio I am aware that the iSilencer in some scenarios brings more improvement than in others. My use case (see Pic) is UAPP bitperfect on an Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus (Qi charging) to a Questyle CMA Fifteen (USB-C to USB-C)... Would you consider this to be a scenario where the iSilencer would bring more or less improvement?

Thanks for asking, but it's really difficult to tell. It all depends on how noisy that tablet is and how good in general as a transport. If it's very noisy, then iSilencer will make a noticeable difference, but there's only one way to find out :)
