iFi audio iDSD Diablo - A portable reference done our way!

crap happens. I bought an Astell&Kern Kann Cube and SR15 in part because they announced In October 2018 that Roon support was coming before the end of the year. It’s nearly 3 years later and they still don’t have it. Complaing about it and attacking a company’s ethics isn’t going to make the functionality magically appear. Sometimes things don’t go according to plan. If they made a habit of over promising and under delivering they wouldn’t be in business and they know it. It’s not like they are intentionally swindling people.
I never used the word "swindle" and should not have questioned their honesty. I continue as a customer.

-But I did explain that promised functionality was also missing from the previous product I bought (until firmware was updated), and I feel the need to remind somebody when I see stuff like iEMatch 4.4 dangled after all this time.

Hi @iFi audio

I have the release notes of the 2 firmwares attached below, side by side.

Both says "cons" = no DSD512/PCM768k

So there is no firmware that does DSD512/PCM768k ?

It is magnanimous of you to "gladly inform" us if a feature promoted in your initial marketing materials is actually implemented some day!

OTOH, you say "we hear you" about functionality that wasn't promised when I bought mine. How about some honesty in your business practices?

It is so magnanimous of you to "gladly inform" us if a feature promoted in your marketing materials is actually implemented some day!

OTOH, you say "we hear you" about functionality that wasn't promised when I bought mine. [EDIT]

The false marketing claim was well-documented earlier (February/March) in this thread. They kind of acknowledged, but have never apologized for, the mistake; choosing instead to do this little song-and-dance pretending that they never presented MQA through SPDIF as a finished feature, and changing the subject. Maybe now they will finally fess up.

I didn't send it back because I had the same experience with my iDSD Black Label after iFI told me at a trade show that it would decode MQA. I bought it, it didn't; but after a few months they posted a firmware update that enabled MQA rendering. I've been hoping since February that they would make good on this product as well.

So when they start hinting that a desired new feature could be on the way, I get annoyed again about one they promised as complete eight months ago.

False MQA claim from the very first post in this thread.

I apologize for any feelings we may have hurt not providing this feature at launch. Talking like this on our thread will not speed up the process at all.

We didn't necessarily hint or confirm that it was on the way, rather it was being looked into, and worked on, and if there areupdates we will drop them here.

The same goes for 4.4 IEMatch. We are legally not able to say more than we have been no matter how much we would like to talk about everything.

The team @iFi audio and I are unfortunately can not say anything more than "we hear you" because we genuinely do.

Rob and I always forward your requests, thoughts, and bugs that need to be fixed to our team members around the world that are responsible for those relevant areas. We are not the ones that can make things materialize out of thin air and we hope you understand that - we are a community team.

Thanks for continuously supporting us (even with our occasional shortcomings) and using our products!

I believe 7.2 is the firmware you are looking for!

Thank you Sebastien Chiu.

Now I have an apology, acknowledgement that MQA via SPDIF was promoted from Day 1, and confirmation that it is still being worked on.

Pretending that it was never offered for sale with this nonexistent feature instead of "talking like this" didn't seem to be a great option for speeding things up, either.

I tested a few months ago and both of them do DSD512/PCM768k with Windows and ASIO driver, but I use with tMac OS X hat supports only DSD256/PCM768k! There is a previous post of mine saying about this test...
the mac thingie seems to be a mac os limitation, not the diablo, as the internet says the same thing about basically any and all software and hardware connected to macs.

As for the firmware: https://ifi-audio.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/iFi-7.2b-firmware-DSD512.zip
Basically all iFi devices use 1 of 2 different XMOS chips, meaning the firmware is build for either the XMOS xu216, or the xu208.

Where can I find a DSD512 testfile? I'm interested to see how my linux machine handles them.

Hi there, I can't get a green or blue light (always in magenta) on my Diablo with Tidal iOS app playing MQA content. Does anyone know how to let it bypass software unfolding? Thanks

I received my Diablo a little while ago and I headed over to the IFI downloads page, entered my serial and obtained the listed firmware. Ran the tool, but here is my mistake - my device was on 7.2 and the one I got from the website took it back to 7.0. I then saw the link above, installed iFi - 7.2b firmware. Is this newer than the 7.2 release, and if not, where can I download the 7.2 firmware from please?

Just for you, and many others, I have compiled a list of the current available iFi devices and which firmwares they use, based on serial numbers:

iDSD Pro0000000001XU2162.x (Pro only!)

Looking at https://ifi-audio.com/download-hub/ it seems that the Hip-DAC section has the most complete list of firmwares for both chipsets. This means you can find v7.2 there. You can just copy the above serial number and it'll show you the goods.

As I said before, I can not guarantee any v7.x firmware will work with the Diablo, since there might be internal differences in the way the XMOS chip interacts with the different devices PCBs.
