If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

I can get the 4XR for just over £260 if I get it from USA, this includes all of the import charges.
The 3XR is about the same price and the 2XR is now £160 . So its £100 difference. So £100 is not a lot I dont think.
As these will be primarily used for when I am at the gym maybe and walking outside then maybe I would go for the model which has the best bass. I think if I am on the move I like a little extra bass.
After reading the messages I am a tad confused as to which model to go for.......but as usual some great help on here.

Then just get the ER4XR, US amazon is a steal even with the imports fees and still have cover if something goes wrong. The ER3XR is only a option if you can get it for £145'ish, But it needs EQ/adaptors to turn into a 4XR. The 2XR is fine for a starter ety but it loses to the ER3/ER4 on detail, You can mimic the 2XR bass with both with the clarity and speed that BA's are good at.

So I got the 4XR yesterday and had a first listen.

Please let me start by saying I am not good at writing descriptively about what I hear, others on here are much better at that.

Some good and some not so good and a crazy episode with a tip left in my ear too.

First of all ……clarity WOW!! And it really is a wow. I was not expecting this from an IEM. The clarity is quite exceptional. I also have the HD800S driven by the Auralic Taurus amp for my home rig so that gives me clarity ….....but this small little 4XR beats this for clarity. Maybe it’s the deep insertion, I don’t know.

The bass is great too. Its not deep its just tight and sounds great so it does not overpower everything else.

They could not be more different to my Andromedas and that’s exactly what I wanted , a different sound. For acoustic music they beat the Andros I think, but I was not that keen when listening to Rock or some dance music. It was just a little too clinical for me and a bit too bright in comparison with my Andros. For me the Andros do Rock and Dance music better, but that’s just my opinion.

But I would imagine classical music is incredible with the 4XR

I used them for 90 minutes last night and also not sure about the deep insertion. It got a little uncomfortable. I am hoping I get used to it, as I love the sound of the 4XR.

Also not so sure about the hygene  I like to think I keep my ears clean …..well maybe I am not so sure anymore. I wont elaborate

I bought these second hand so there were only a few tips left in. So I have one that fits and I am not sure what size it is . It’s the clear triple flange and I need to order more if I keep these. I usually use large comply foam tips on the Andro so I may order some of the t100 as well.

My biggest issue is I have a problem this morning caused by my own stupidity really. Although maybe the deep insertion may also be partially responsible.

When trying out tips I had some Spinfits which I knew were the wrong size for the 4XR but I wanted to try them. When I removed the 4XR the tips remained in my ear. The right one I managed to get out no bother. The left one was very troublesome. I had to poke about to get it out and it took a few attempts.

After this it was fine and I listened to music no bother, however this morning I am virtually deaf in the left ear. It feels like the feeling when you are at altitude in a plane. Been like this for 4 hours so I am a little concerned. The right ear is a little tender too but the left is a worry.

So yes an interesting first few hours with these.

I need some more tips and I need to get used to the deep insertion as I love the clarity that these offer.

I used to get ear infections in the past a lot but using IEMs hasn't actually contributed to that in any way. I'm not actually getting them anymore. If you have a feeling of fullness in your ear it might be an ear infection (possibly in the middle ear). Chances are it was there all along but it coincidentally got worse now (or you have a cold, which also causes congestion). Or you used dirty tips (if they were used) and contracted some outer ear infection. It's weird if you've never had an infection before but it should hurt for a while. Maybe see a doctor (though most of them clear up on their own in 5 days).

The clarity thing is in the tuning. Most of the treble is fairly linear with a dip between 6-8K of about 4 dB or more, which actually removes some of the grain in recordings but also makes this IEM sound slightly muddy on some songs. 10K peak is a bit sharp but the treble above it is very linear and clear sounding (though I reckon my LCD-2 has clearer treble overall, despite not having as good a tuning even post EQ) which brings out the details in recordings.

Edit: Also, make sure to clean your tips daily. And wash your ears too.

Yeah my gut feeling is I have done some damage whilst poking about to get the tip out .......I will give it a few days
The clarity is outstanding

If there is congestion/fullness in your ear it's not damage. It better not be because it might be permanent. You also didn't mention feeling any pain while poking around. Rupturing an eardrum would hurt like hell.

it was a little uncomfortable poking around , but not a massive pain no . I remember once years ago i got some water or soap in my ear and it feels like that . But it’s much much worse . Ear feels blocked .There is also a loud ringing noise like I used to get after a loud rock gig
I will just have to wait and see what the next few days bring

@Womaz I see you're in the UK. Let me suggest that on Monday you ring your local Amplifon, and ask their advice and whether they can help you – since they do impressions for custom hearing aid fittings, they are used to seeing blockages (usually earwax, but still) and can direct you to a suitable local specialist.

If you were in London I would suggest a trip to the Clear Ear Clinic, who specialise in earwax and but can probably deal with other blockages as well. Even after removal of the stray eartip you might well have some impacted earwax that could affect hearing.

Edited to add: I've been a customer of both the above (well, in London, not Newcastle), and my experience was good each time.
