The new kids (tubes) on the block here are actually the two Hytron 6SN7GTs that I got on the weekend ☺️

Paired with the Foots Cray, I really enjoyed what I heard yesterday, but haven’t done a comparison with the Sylvania/McIntosh trio that was on there before. Will listen to the new tubes for the week, then swap to compare. Will report back.

I just learned that, if using a cable adapter (XLR to 6.35 in my case), one should rather unplug the whole thing from the amp, than leave the adapter in the amp and only unplug the cable that’s in the headphones. So this should be avoided, right:

Related question: Until now, I was happy with using the pictured adapter with my HD820 and E3 that both sport (rather great) XLR terminated cables. Would you strongly recommend getting a separate cable with 6.35 termination to go into the HP8 or is using the adapter „responsibly“ good enough?

Can’t speak to the HP8 specifically, but I always leave my XLR-to-6.35mm adapter plugged into my little SW51+ tube amp without the headphone cable attached to it. I always plug in the headphone cable to the adapter before turning on the amp though. I can’t imagine there could be anything dangerous about leaving the adapter attached to the amp with it powered off.

I also have a nice XLR headphone cable that I opted to buy a matching XLR-to-6.35mm adapter for instead of reterminating the cable. I’m a little OCD, so I made sure the adapter used the exact same wiring as the headphone cable. I think this is a perfectly viable option, especially when you have multiple amps, some of which are better balanced while others are single-ended only.

I'm a lot OCD about this stuff. For years used a very solid Forza Audio Works "pigtail" w/4-pin XLR female on headphone side and 6.35mm jack on amp side. I would plug my balanced cable into that and plug the pigtail into the HP8 (or Woo WA3). It actually never occurred to me to leave the pigtail plugged in.

More recently I picked up a nice, small adapter that does the same thing (DHC ultrashort connector), which is easier to use. But again, it never occurred to me to leave the thing plugged into the HP8.

Apparently my OCD needs new firmware or something.

Well, it just seems so practical to do it 😅

I’m using the very same „pigtail“.
