Well, I guess I just found the solution to the artwork problem...
Up until now, after ripping CDs to FLAC I saved high resolution JPGs (roughly 100 through 500 KB) of the respective covers using the following naming scheme "Neil_Young_1972_Harvest".
Then I used the resulting file to write the covers to the ID3 tags using xACT (under Mac OS X).
Just to make sure (I read something about naming the JPGs "folder" here) I copied the JPGs twice and renamed them to "cover" and "folder" respectively, all within the respective album folders.
You now the result, the DX80 did not show artwork in the menus or "Now Playing".
Some minutes ago I had an idea. Maybe just being in the tags does not suffice for the DX80 to find the JPGs and it still needs a certain name. So I deleted the original images bound into the tags and replaced them using my JPGs named "folder". For this I used another (nice and lightweight) tag editor called "Kid3".
Long story short; now it works and I am a happy camper.
Only one cover does not show yet but it is very large (above 1 MB), so that should be the reason.
Slightly off-topic: If you are looking for a nice FLAC player under Mac OS X; VOX is very lean but still beautiful and sounds great. Highly recommended...
