It would also be interesting comparison with SP2000. At least I find the MAX3 (from memory) even smoother than SP2000SS I had. But I wouldn't call it warm, really. It is well defined and contoured. Especially the mids. So clean and clear with no edginess. The classic "popping up" AKM mids, but so well done. I have mentioned that I prefer the ESS based implementations, but this is just the best of two worlds kind of sound.

3MAX vs SP2k SS (w/AKA) - the tonality is not too far off, though I do hear 3MAX with a little more weight and better articulation of bass and a little more sparkle/air in treble. One dead giveaway in a blind comparison testing, 3MAX soundstage is wider with more holographic 3D imaging. And closed Android of SP2k with sideloading of whitelisted apps vs 3MAX fully open Android experience is another big advantage, though SP2k is more portable in comparison to transportable nature of 3MAX.

Sorry for a dark picture, getting cloudy outside and I didn't have my usual kitchen lights on :)

@twister6 have you by chanced noticed any difference in driving power between the DX220 Max and DX300 Max?

My hardest to drive cans are ATH-R70x, (470ohms, 99dB sensitivity). Had 2MAX and 3MAX at max digital volume, in med gain, using 3.5mm output (don't have a balanced cable for R70x), and both are at around 1 o'clock on analog volume pot, my normal listening volume before wife and kids come screaming from the other room (these are open back cans). So, relatively speaking, power output is matched.

Awesome thanks, sounds promising indeed!

Moon Audio just shipped my order... expected Thursday!

I'll now stop asking about power so much and test for myself when it arrives.

Maybe.

How do you find it drives your HD800?

(I lasted 3 hrs...)
My HD800 was heavily modded by @Maxx134. IMO the combo (with the 220 and even more so the 300 Max) gets ridiculously close and in some cases, outperforms some of the more expensive desktop separates I’ve had.
