I’ve got the 160 on a shortlist of midrange daps to upgrade to from a Shanling m0. I just see so much negativity towards the stability and “jankiness” of this and other ibasso daps. Especially concerning would be using Etymotics and hearing distortion from WiFi or system interference.
Can anyone assuage these fears or are they totally valid and important to consider when buying this dap?

Personally I do not have a problem when streaming on Spotify. Recently just subscribed to Tidal and notice that if you stream Tidal while the bluetooth of the DAP is connected to another device example a mobile phone and you are using the phone, Tidal becomes unstable with breaks. But once you do not use the phone then it's ok. I happened to find this out by chance. So I stopped connecting it to my phone by bluetooth when I am streaming.

I did not experience any Wifi interference issue. I also upgraded it from Shanling M0 and the sound of the DX160 is almost best in it's price range. Personally I feel that it's a very good DAP playing almost any file you throw at it. But if you are going to be using a bluetooth earphone or headphone with it then I suggest you stick to the Shanling M0 which has a very good bluetooth module or consider other DAP. I would recommend you to visit any audio shop that can let you demo it before making the purchase. Despite it's flaws which I can live with, it's a very good sounding and capable DAP. If only they include one more slot for the memory card.

I probably won’t be using Bluetooth at all, and only Spotify for streaming. It’s main use case will be with IEMs and local flac files. How much better is the sound of the 160 vs the Shanling?

Hi.
I've owned the DX160 since May of this year and listen with Etymotic ER4SRs.
I don't hear any noise when listening to FLAC music files. Music sounds very organic with this DAP with a very natural timbre and nice soundstage. I don't use any streaming service and keep WiFi off when listening and have never even tried Bluetooth. This is my 3rd iBasso DAP (DX120, DX150) and definitely the best one of the three, IMO. The 160 has performed pretty much flawlessly during the 3+ months I've owned it, with average daily use of 1-2 hours. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this player. I enjoy both listening to and using it.
Charlie
PS
Mine is 2020 revised version of the DX160.

Finally used the dx160 as transport to my DAC(topping d90). I just used the UAPP and a type c hub.

I have no issue so far, am a spotify and tidal user. no wifi issue or noise issue so far. 1 issue i have is only with my sd card and spotify where as i spotify would delete my offline downloads occasionally. Tried with few sd cards same. so currently using internal storage temporarily.

Very interesting, I was looking into the Topping D90 (or D50S) myself. My home/office setup uses a Cyrus Soundkey DAC (into A Cyrus 6XP Amp) which is limited to 24-bit/96kHz and lacks DSD and MQA support.

Did you by change compared the Line-out of the DX 160 connected directly into your amp with the Topping D90?

if so, can you tell how they compare?

I'd like my home setup to support the same file format I am using on my DX 160. Until now I have to convert DSD or ISOs to FLAC.

Funny (or not) coincidences.... I "arrived" to DX160 2020 coming from a Shaling M0, and a Fio M6 in the middle :).

I'm using Etymotics also (ER2XR), mostly listening flac using poweramp and coulnd't be more happy.

At the moment not listening streaming, but when doing it, no complains about TIDAL (master and HIFI) and spotify.

For the money, Dx160 is amazing.

Is there an easy way to browse local music by folder structure on this dap? Even though my metadata tends to be good, I really dislike when I choose to browse by Artist on a device (how I primarily browse) and because of slight differences in how “The” may or may not be there, or if it’s the artist “with” an additional musician it then creates separate entries. For this reason I prefer being able to fully browse with my own folder structure. Is that a simple thing on the 160?

You can easily go to the SD card and then to any folder and see the music as you have it placed in your own folders. This is the method I prefer. This is the same on all of our daps.

Etymotic isn't sensitive that's why he doesn't hear anything. Its impossible not to hear anything, because all 160 units i have tried and i tried 3 2019 from different countries and distributors and one 2020 version from 3.5 has hisses the same or better say not hisses but has some noise rise when using display and with sensitive iems for example tfz no3 you can hear it clearly. Worse scenario is with small impedance and big sensivity iems. So i don't believe there are units without this noise. But with not sensitive iems it's not a problem. In any other way dx160 is amazing dap only i would like it to be dead silent.
