iBasso DX100 Reference DAP - ES9018 inside
Jan 19, 2012 at 9:06 AM Post #1,741 of 2,799
yeah basically it's the same size as the HM801

similar battery life, similar price. Diff so far:

DX100:

Bigger internal storage
Better UI
Has 1/4" output

HM801:

Used as USB DAC (can DX100 do this?)
Switchable amp cards

Definitely direct competitors to each other. Can't wait for a HM801 vs DX100 review!

When I tried to order to United States, the shipping price was coming $10,071.00. With that price,
I can fly first class to their factory and get a limited edition. LOL !!

That's either a very expensive error or their way of saying out of stock.

You ever see a spec that says 'don't buy me cause I am not worth it'?

On a side note, I read an article a while ago regarding Android's audio output from a Chinese website (here, if you read Chinese). It mainly discusses the limitation of current generation of Android (at least up to 2.2, 2.3 and 3.0) that its Linux kernel is unable to deal with anything more than 44.1kHz properly as everything (48, 96, 192kHz) gets sample down to 44.1kHz via the internal SRC and usually resulted in distortion. I wonder if this will be a problem for the DX100 as well or maybe iBasso has found a way to deal with it, perhaps via a SRC of its own?

Now that is the key information here. As for 7 hours play time, for such a dac/amp combo on android is already very good.

But what is the purpose then to buy a DX100 if it down samples anything above 16/44. That means your fancy 24/96 will be actually playing at 16/44 What?! I'm a bit disappointed. iDevice+CLAS+amp does the same 16/44 with only downside of it hard to carry capability.

Even a very good implementation of es9018 won't make me happy if it will be technically limited to 16/44. 24/192 aren't that necessary but 24/96 is really needed to bring out the good dac/amp combo to a high SQ level.

ClieOS do you know capabilities of Android 3.0 and 4.0 to play 24/96 or 192 music without down sampling and distortion? And if there will be a possibility to upgrade the DX100 with 3.0 or 4.0 if it will be able to play 24/96 in proper way without down sampling.

Of course I know of iBasso proper hardware SRC function on DX100. But the DAP is stated as 24/192. That soesn't make any sense to me.

Considering with a head-fi $699 price and $829 retail price in my opinion it must be a non compromise DAP. As it stated on their website:

24Bit/192KHz Reference Digital Audio Player

Did somebody emailed iBasso a question about true sampling rate of DX100??

It seems it's really expensive shipping price to Turkey :)

It is the weight that gives that exorbitant shipping fees. I wonder what is included in the parcel on top of the DAP to make it 1000kg.

Well it says that is Android 2.3 with custom audio software. I know that iBasso has stressed that it works at 24/196. I have one coming so soon I will have hands on.

From their site: Audio Formats Supported: APE, FLAC, WAV, WMA, AAC, ALAC, OGG, MP3

Also the warranty, 1 year and 10 years free labor. Interesting.

So, I wonder how long it will be before the price of the HM 801 is reduced. I sure would like to know who bought the 801 to use it as a USB dac(That added feature always had me scratching my head as there are actually a good bit of similar (or better) quality USB dacs for a lower cost. It's a portable player, why would you use another portable source as the "player" if you had this with you ?. Don't answer that as I'm really not interested in knowing ) (If the UI is anywhere as lame as it is on the 602 you would maybe have to give me money to use it anyway. I laughed everytime I looked at the USB dac output on the 602)

I use the HM-801 as a dap in transit (or in bed) and then as a usb dac at the office with my full music library while charging (and I know another Dane who uses the HM-602 in exactly the same way). Being able to use it both as dap and dac is a major point for me and something that dissapointed me the dx100 would not do. Both sound very, very nice both as dac and dap, naturally provided you like the soundsig they have. The gui is fine for me as I only play full albums from end to end and I have everything stored in a similar directory structure. My biggest beef with the HM units is fairly poor format/samplerate/bitdepth support and lack of gapless. The Studio V also sounds very good but the gui is worse and the format support is also worse than the HM units but battery life is fantastic.

Wow, sad news about the battery life. 7 hours is just not enough. 15+ hours and this would be on order for me already. This might be a stupid question, but can this thing charge while in use? I know other iBasso products don't have this feature, but I'm hoping this one does. That way at least we can buy an external battery pack for longer periods without access to an outlet. Although that defeats the purpose of an "all-in-one brick," by adding another piece to lug around.

Waiting on more reviews & news on battery...
